About us
Founded in 1969, Next Door is an award-winning, birth-to-five early learning school based in Milwaukee’s Central City. We focus on the first five years of life because that is when a child’s brain development is most active and when we can have the greatest impact on a child’s future success. Our ultimate goal is to get our students ready for school and ready for life! We offer families full and half-day center-based programming as well as a home-based option. All of our programs provide access to health and dental care, as well as special education and mental health services. Knowing that parents are a child’s first teacher, Next Door offers a number of supportive services for moms and dads. They include: prenatal services, adult education and a fatherhood program. We also have a team of Family Advocates, who work closely with parents to make sure the family has what they need to succeed. Our reach goes even further into the community by leading a partnership program with ten early childhood organizations in Milwaukee County. Next Door staff offers teacher coaching and training on curriculum assessment at each of the partner locations. By working together, we can increase access to safe and high-quality infant and toddler care. Between our own sites and the partner agencies, Next Door currently serves more than 2,000 children and their families. Next Door offers a host of giving and volunteer opportunities throughout the year to support our children and families. To learn more about us, visit our website at www.nextdoormke.org or call us at (414) 562-2929.

NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Simply the best laugh. Our sweet friend was full of giggles during her Read with Me time with her reader friend. Was it the story? Was it the expressive way Ms. Rosemary read to her? Perhaps it was the simple joy of connecting with others and hearing, seeing, and learning something new.

Last week, Next Door announced the exciting news that our Charter K4 program with Milwaukee Public Schools will extend for another year. We are thrilled about the continuation of this partnership and look forward to another successful school year. The announcement was featured in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article published yesterday, which highlights the extension and Next Door's commitment to providing high-quality early childhood education to students in Milwaukee. NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Do you have this much energy? We’re not sure if the Milwaukee Bucks Inc. interns wore out our students … or the other way around. This week and last, interns from our favorite NBA team visited Next Door to play with our children at both campuses. There was running, jumping, ball play, slides and so much more. The group also helped organize our new STEM Lab opening this school year. A great partnership with great impact.

NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Splashing around. Beautiful Wisconsin days bring opportunities to play in a different way. In addition to being a great way to cool off in hot and humid weather, water play can help improve children's balance and strength and introduce them to brand new sensory experiences. And tons of fun with friends.

Diamond has been a Read With Me volunteer for the past two years. She's been an avid reader since she was a child, remembering how often she found herself nose deep in a good book. Now, as an adult, she hopes to pass on that love to the next generation. Today, Diamond's daughter Harlem joined her as a Read With Me volunteer for the first time, hoping to do the same. Group volunteering with your family is a special way to give back to our community while spending time with those you love. Volunteers like Diamond and Harlem help us continue to build a love of reading, as well as our student's foundational language and literacy skills. If you too want to continue to pass on the love of reading, with your family or on your own, e-mail Missy at volunteer@nextdoormke.org to get involved.
