Addressing the impacts of climate change requires big, bold solutions, and sometimes, nature already provides them. Our partners at the American Geophysical Union explore how #wetlands can act as natural carbon sinks, offering a vital solution to climate change. Their new book, "Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management," discusses how wetlands store carbon and contribute to environmental management. The Exchange aims to confront urgent climate impacts and develop innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
About us
The New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative model for accelerating climate change solutions for New York City and beyond. Powered by its strong partnerships and future home on Governors Island, The Exchange will use education, research, an innovation hub, job training, and public programs to prepare communities to respond to climate challenges. The Exchange is based on a simple idea: collaboration works. The Exchange’s partner network includes climate experts, researchers, educators, business leaders, and community organizers who are working together to tackle the effects of climate change. Expected to open in 2028, The Exchange’s home on Governors Island will be a beacon for sustainable and resilient urban environments around the world, using renewable energy and zero-waste technologies to generate more energy than it consumes. The Exchange also aspires to be New York City’s first large-scale mass timber development and first Living Building Challenges certification. Together, The Exchange’s partner network, physical campus, and extensive offerings will explore and develop climate solutions focused on justice and inclusion; the relationship between energy, water, and food systems; and sustainable urban environments. Opportunities to explore and get involved with The Exchange will be available before construction starts.

📰 With soaring temperatures in #NewYorkCity, cooling centers across the five boroughs are open to keep New Yorkers safe and comfortable during the heatwave. The National Weather Service has reported that it will feel like 95 to 100 degrees outdoors in the city this week. Cooling centers are available to provide relief, particularly in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods like Harlem. Heat-related illnesses claim the lives of an estimated 350 New Yorkers every summer. As the climate crisis progresses, it is crucial to continue investing in infrastructure to ensure the safety and livability of our city. With committed partners across the city and the world, the #NewYorkClimateExchange is dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions. Investing in clean energy is critical to solving the climate crisis. And it doesn’t all have to be electric. Our partners at Brookhaven National Laboratory are pioneering efforts in biofuels by engineering crops to increase their oil yield. Utilizing cutting-edge genetic technology, they have successfully increased the yield of one plant by 22%. Innovations like these are crucial to achieving our goals as we strive for net zero. I’m extremely excited to welcome Neil Padukone to the New York Climate Exchange leadership team as our new Director of Green Economic Transformation. Neil will be responsible for helping launch programs on green workforce and climate-responsive economic development. Neil's programs will support the adaptation of existing businesses, workforces, and economic and industrial systems to the needs of climate change. Neil was previously Executive Director of the Manufacturing and Industrial Innovation Council (MaiiC), the City of New York's industry partnership with the manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and infrastructure services sectors, housed in the NYC Mayor's Office. In that capacity, he co-authored the City’s recently released Green Economy Action Plan, co-led the City Hall Industrial Working Group, and designed and managed initiatives like ApprenticeNYC for Advanced Manufacturing, workforce innovation for the electric vehicle transition, Inside Industrial career awareness for young people, and design-for-manufacturability prototyping for green technology, among others. During the Covid-19 crisis, Neil was seconded to the Food Czar Taskforce, serving as team lead on efforts to secure, stabilize, and increase efficiency in the city’s food supply chain. Neil is also an adjunct professor at City College of New York, where he teaches a course on sustainable transportation. Welcome Neil!

As climate change drives increasingly severe weather events, the resilience of our power grid becomes ever more crucial. We're proud to share that our partner, Brookhaven National Laboratory, has announced the execution of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 's strategy for a secure and reliable power grid. This initiative aligns with the Biden Administration's ambitious goal to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50-52% by 2030—a vital step in the green transition. Brookhaven Lab's leadership in advancing a secure and resilient power grid is a testament to their commitment to a sustainable future. Are parks in New York City's wealthier areas more biodiverse? Researchers at our partner institution, New York University, are exploring this question by studying the biodiversity in various NYC parks. Ecologists Valentina Alaasam and Rafael Baez are counting ants, slugs, and earthworms to investigate whether there's a correlation between a neighborhood's wealth and the biodiversity of its parks. This research aims to provide valuable insights into how wealth influences urban nature. It is fantastic to see our partners at NYU leading important studies that contribute to our understanding of urban ecosystems.
