"The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the cath lab also has the most potential to reduce radiation exposure to patients and operators," conclude researchers Giorgio A. Medranda, MD, and Prospero B. Gogo, MD in a survey published by Cardiac Interventions Today. Due to the rapid growth of transcatheter structural interventions in interventional cardiology, radiation exposure and its associated risks are expected to increase. The goal must be to acquire the clinical information needed while minimizing radiation doses as much as possible. Radiation safety culture has become more prevalent in cardiac catheterization laboratories across the country. Evidence-based strategies are paramount for reducing radiation exposure to patients, cardiac catheter lab staff, and physicians. Ionizing radiation damages the human body at the atomic or molecular level and results in cellular damage. Cells can die or their DNA can be damaged causing genetic mutations that lead to cancer. Repeated exposure to radiation in cardiac and GI imaging creates an alarming threat to patients and medical staff performing procedures like cardiac catheterization or endoscopy. Traditional protection only goes so far. A new generation of fluoroscopy systems with fixed hardware and AI-guided radiation dosing is rapidly becoming the new safety standard. Here's why: https://lnkd.in/e4fiHn-v #RadiationReduction #AIImaging #MedicalImaging
