We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and wildlife of the Pacific Rim.
About us
Pacific Environment empowers communities to protect their well-being and the natural world around them. We get money and expertise to the ground in challenging venues on the Pacific Rim, including China, Russia, and the Alaskan Arctic. By strengthening communities and protecting the environment in such places, we also promote transparency, public participation, and legal enforcement, which form the basis on which people can achieve lasting protection of their health and the environment. Pacific Environment offers one of the very few granting and training programs serving grassroots leaders around the Pacific Rim. At the heart of our long-term commitment to community-led environmental activism is a comprehensive support program. The community leaders and groups we partner with consistently tell us that the value we provide stems from three things: 1) giving them financial and mentoring support; 2) bringing them together in coordinated networks; and 3) supplying much needed expertise for their campaigns (e.g., technical, scientific, legal). Over three decades we have nurtured more than 150 grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim and provided millions of dollars. In turn, the networks we foster create concentric ripples outward to many more people and organizations that ally together to undertake public education, litigation, media outreach, large-scale advocacy campaigns, and sophisticated policy work. To complement these community efforts, Pacific Environment has developed substantial expertise in global policy venues typically beyond the reach of local leaders. For example, we have obtained one of the few seats available to NGOs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. agency that writes the rules for the high seas. We use this seat to advocate for rules that protect marine mammals and indigenous food security, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and protect Arctic waters from the dangers of catastrophic oil spills.

👀 Global shipping leader A.P. Moller - Maersk's announcement that it is backpedaling on its commitment to zero-emission shipping just underlines why President Biden should sign an executive order to decarbonize the shipping industry and ports. 📝 Maersk has announced 50-60 newbuilds and the Wall Street Journal has reported that most of these new ships will run on LNG. LNG is a fossil fuel that is primarily methane, a greenhouse gas that is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide on a 20-year timescale. 🚫⛔🚫 "Maersk's announcement to purchase new LNG ships is a dangerous step backward in the fight against climate change. LNG is a dirty fossil fuel that is even worse for the climate than traditional fuels. Maersk's decision to backslide on its climate commitments show that we can’t rely on industry to self-regulate, which is exactly why President Biden must use his executive authority to push for truly sustainable alternatives and sign an executive order on shipping decarbonization. The time for real climate leadership is now,” Antonio Santos, Federal Climate Policy Director at Pacific Environment. Sign our petition: https://lnkd.in/g5sU9GNc

Today, history was made! 📣 After dozens of community members and advocates spoke on the importance of cleaning up rail yards, the South Coast Air Quality Management District voted to adopt the #RailISR. 🎉 This is a big step in addressing the harm from freight facilities! Big thank you to South Coast Air Quality Management District for their courageous leadership adopting the ISR and we hope the board will carry this momentum and adopt the #PortISR later this year. This would not have been possible without over 100 community members who came out to speak and the persistent advocacy of many organizers and groups including East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, CCAEJ Action, The People's Collective for Environmental Justice & The Moving Forward Network. More details on what it means and what's next coming soon!

The future of ocean #shipping is clean! 🌊 That's why we're part of the Beyond Methane Pledge alongside Say No to LNG – Global Shipping Campaign & 6 other other founding champions. 💪 Join us to call on industry leaders to sign the pledge and take action to: ❌ Halt expansion of LNG and methane-based fuel projects immediately. 📉 Phase out LNG and other methane-based fuel use by 2030. 🌎 Promote transparency by using language that reflects the climate impact of methane. "LNG poses a grave threat to our climate, environment, and communities. As a potent greenhouse gas, it significantly contributes to global warming and has no place in a sustainable future." 🎉 Big shoutout to the other founding champions including: Stand.earth Opportunity Green Clean Arctic Alliance Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션) NABU e.V. Transport & Environment (T&E) Clean Shipping Coalition

This month, Pacific Environment and the Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance hosted the Young Painter Contest as part of #PlasticFreeJuly. 🎨🥤 Part of a broader campaign to reduce single-use plastics, the contest encouraged students to create art about limiting single-use plastics to contribute to a greener, cleaner future. The contest received over 100 entries from around the country! The impact of this contest extended beyond the children to their families and communities. ➡️ Parents reported increased discussions at home about environmental issues and more conscious efforts to reduce plastic use. ➡️ Teachers observed heightened interest and engagement in environmental topics among their students, indicating that the contest had successfully integrated environmental education into the children's daily lives. ➡️ The initiative inspired schools to incorporate more environmental activities into their curricula. Some schools have started their own plastic reduction campaigns and art projects, motivated by the success of the Young Painter Contest. Pacific Environment and the Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance are committed to continuing this momentum, by expanding the contest to include older students, introducing new categories such as digital art and video production and hosting workshops to further educate and inspire young environmental advocates. Together, we can inspire and drive positive environmental change. Stay tuned for more plastic-free art! Would you stand up for clean air? 📣 Check out the incredible new short documentary by The Story of Stuff Project following Latino activists John Mataka and Bianca Lopez as they take on Covanta, one of the last trash incinerators in California. Set in California's Central Valley, the film depicts the devastating health consequences of pollution and highlights their tireless efforts to close the facility for good. Through their unwavering determination, they call for environmental justice and a safer future for their community. In 2022, Valley Improvement Projects co-sponsored a bill so that burning trash would no longer count as “recycling” under state law — the bill passed in 2022. But the hard work for environmental justice doesn’t stop there, Stanislaus country still faces disproportionately high levels of pollution generated from a high traffic highway, waste brought in from outside and pesticide use. 📺 Watch the documentary here: https://lnkd.in/g6euz_pi 📱Support and follow Valley Improvement Projects' work: @VIP_Stanislaus on X & @valleyimprovementprojects on IG! ✍️ Sign the petition to tell the U.S. treasury no subsidies for waste incinerators: https://lnkd.in/g-ea5jcF #WeAreJustTryingToBreathe #ZeroWaste #Incinerator
