  • Pella Regional Health Center is pleased to welcome Seema Harichand, MD to the medical staff beginning August 1. Dr. Harichand will see patients in the Mission Cancer + Blood Clinic inside Pella Regional Medical Center. Dr. Harichand graduated summa cum laude from Kent State University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. She subsequently attended medical school at Ohio State University where she completed her first two years of medical school. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, and then went on to complete a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Emory University in 2009. She worked at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and had a faculty appointment at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute until she left in December 2010 to join a private practice in Florida. She relocated to Des Moines and joined Mission Cancer + Blood in December 2017. Dr. Harichand is originally from Youngstown, Ohio and is married with three children. She enjoys reading and spending time with her family. Dr. Freeman and Dr. Brugioni will continue to see patients in the Mission Cancer clinic at Pella Regional weekly as well. Dr. Anand will no longer serve patients at Pella Regional Health Center, he will focus his practice in Des Moines. For more information call Mission Cancer + Blood at 515-226-5002

  • Hospice of Pella has scheduled the next six-week training class for Thursday evenings, August 29 – October 3 from 6 – 8:30 pm at the Comfort House meeting room. To sign up, or for more information, call Hospice of Pella at 641-620-5050. Hospice of Pella volunteers are members of the community that donate their time in service of those Hospice of Pella serves. Many times the role of the Comfort House and home hospice volunteers is behind the scenes, but the full scope of all that the volunteers do is admirable. Whether it’s reading to a patient, weeding the garden or running much needed errands to a hospice patient in their home, the volunteers are an important part of the team.

  • Pella Regional Health Center now offers iovera°, a safe, non-surgical treatment that uses targeted cold therapy to stop nerves from sending pain signals. It has been shown to provide long-lasting pain control for osteoarthritis of the knee, or patients undergoing total knee replacement, and helping to reduce opioid consumption without permanent damage to nerve structure. “With the Iovera procedure, pain can be reduced or completely eliminated allowing return of function and lifestyle,” said Andy Johnson, Pain Specialist at Pella Regional Health Center. “It is exciting to be able to offer this technology to target painful nerves using precision ultrasound guidance without medication or side effects. This not only can be used for post-operative pain control for total knee arthroplasties, but it can be used for many other pain conditions as well such as rib pain, hip and shoulder pain, and more.” If you are a candidate for a partial or total knee replacement, you may benefit from an iovera° procedure before your surgery. Pella Regional orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Nathan Nicholson works closely with Andy Johnson to schedule patients prior to surgery. Scan the QR code for a video about iovera cold therapy.
