At the core of indoor environmental quality is good lighting. This extends from the use of natural lighting, through high quality lighting design, includes good lighting controls, and considers non traditional lighting for health like UVGC technologies. At each step, careful understanding of science, cost, operations, and human impact are critical to improving occupant experience and sustainability.
SBST students study lighting beginning in their Building Science (301) and Building Components (302) courses. They have applied experience with Auditing (322), costing in Fiscal Management (432), Lighting (401) design and implementation, and project implementation via Financing Energy Efficiency (331).
An industry partnership with PLANLED INC brings out students in touch with pioneers in human centric lighting and upper room germicidal UV technologies, both nuanced and sustainable options for improving our buildings indoor environment. Our students have had the opportunity to work with PlanLED CEO John Hwang, CTO Andy Lee and get hands-on field experiences from their team for multiple years.
On November 29th our SBST students will be in attendance at Elevate '23, an event with PLANLED INC which will discuss the implementation of the Upper Room GUV strategy to meet the recommended level of air safety.
