Heid Nafman-Onda’s 2018 #LungCancer diagnosis came as a surprise—but if there’s one thing she wants you to take away from her diagnosis, it’s this: “Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer, but no one deserves it. There is a human story behind every diagnosis, and no one should ever feel alone nor judged because their cancer originated in their lungs." Since her diagnosis, Heidi has used what she’s learned about the disease to start The White Ribbon Project, dedicated to improving lung cancer prevention, early detection, research funding, treatments and survivorship. Here’s what else the grassroot organization’s founder had to say about why no one should ever feel alone in their diagnosis: https://bit.ly/3SvMyVE #WorldLungCancerDay

About us
The Prevent Cancer Foundation® is the only U.S.-based nonprofit organization solely dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection. Through research, education, outreach and advocacy, we have helped countless people avoid a cancer diagnosis or detect their cancer early enough to be successfully treated. We are driven by a vision of a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable. The Foundation is rising to meet the challenge of reducing cancer deaths by 40% by 2035. To achieve this, we are committed to investing $20 million for innovative technologies to detect cancer early and advance multi-cancer screening, $10 million to expand cancer screening and vaccination access to medically underserved communities, and $10 million to educate the public about screening and vaccination options. Yesterday was #WorldHepatitisDay, recognized annually to step up efforts on hepatitis. While many are aware that the human papillomavirus (HPV) can lead to cancer, it's less known that hepatitis B and C are leading causes of liver cancer. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to protect yourself from these viruses and reduce the risk of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030. We are proud to support organizations across the country that are contributing to this goal but helping their communities prevent hepatitis-related cancers and striving for #BetterOutcomes: In Lane County, Oregon, the HIV Alliance is connecting people impacted by hepatitis C with medical care to clear the virus. They're also providing support to improve the health and quality of life to patients who are unhoused or living with serious mental illness—patients who might otherwise fall through the cracks. The Virginia Harm Reduction Coalition in southwest Virginia has been able to bridge gaps, remove barriers, and “meet people where they are but not leave them there.” Their program consists of activities aimed at preventing, detecting and treating cancer-causing viruses that are common among people who use drugs. The Asian American Healthy Liver Initiative, run by the Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, works to prevent liver cancer deaths within Asian communities in the tristate area. They are well on their way to conducting 27 free screening events to identify new patients with chronic hepatitis B and are expanding culturally competent patient navigation services while utilizing various communication channels to raise awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer. Earlier this year, the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s mission hit closer to home than usual for one of our own. What started as a tiny, persistent spot on Jody Hoyos, MHA’s cheek was found to be basal cell carcinoma during a routine visit to the dermatologist. “As CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, sometimes I wonder if we’re doing enough. Do people understand our message? Are we providing them with the information they need to take action? Oftentimes in health care, we forget ‘the people’ we are trying to reach also includes ourselves.” Jody's experience reinforces a vital message: Always pay attention to changes in your skin and advocate for your health. Early Detection = Better Outcomes. Read Jody’s full story on the blog: https://bit.ly/3Wkk3v5

The Prevent Cancer Foundation is saddened by the death of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Congresswoman whose unwavering commitment to justice resulted in helping people receive proper care and achieve #BetterOutcomes for their health. Having been in remission from #BreastCancer for over a decade, Rep. Jackson Lee announced her #PancreaticCancer diagnosis in June. Despite her own health battles, she continued to fight for policies that addressed health care disparities and improved access to care for all communities. Her resilience and advocacy brought significant attention to the importance of equitable health care—and the need for a world where cancer is preventable, detectable and beatable for all. Her legacy will continue to guide and motivate our efforts in ensuring that everyone has a chance to lead a healthy and cancer-free life. https://lnkd.in/e7JNrf6w

In June, the FDA approved the first-ever point-of-care test to diagnose hepatitis C infection in adults. The Cepheid Xpert HCV test, which uses a fingertip blood sample, will make testing for hepatitis C—a leading cause of liver cancer—more accessible and faster for millions of people in the U.S. Here’s what you need to know: https://lnkd.in/eVGtRQaG
