XBRL is a data model that facilitates highly precise financial information exchange between financial regulators and regulated financial entities. It has become pervasive in the financial domain not only in the USA but also in the UK, EU, and Africa. This shift to a data-first approach to ruke-maker/taker information exchange is beginning to take shape in other regulated industries. It is happening in parallel with the advances in AI, LLMs, RAG, and knowledge graphs. Indeed, it is now clear that XBRL and other machine-readable data models are examples of knowledge graphs. In the early days of the internet, efforts to digitize physical information focused on creating scanned copies and PDFs of paper records. This approach, spanning industries from newspapers to eBooks, education, finance, and online shopping, soon proved inadequate, prompting businesses to adopt more digital-friendly formats. For rule-makers, paper has several benefits that have been difficult to replicate digitally such as fixity. In addition, there are historic and traditional processes rooted in paper that may not easily be replicated in digital environments and require a specialized approach. The creation and consumption of rules are increasingly digital, meaning that computers are now prevalent. Businesses across the board are moving past the PDF and early approaches to digitizing content – the digital proxies for paper. The Portable Document Format (PDF) turned 32 in 2024. Adobe co-founder, Dr John Warnock developed the idea as part of The Camelot Project. The aim was to provide an open format for documents that could be shared from any application, sent electronically, and viewed and printed on any machine. The PDF has since become a dominant file format, growing in tandem with the internet on its journey to the mainstream. It has earned its position as an honorary Millennial. Meanwhile, technology continues to develop at breakneck speed. While the PDF still has its place, its limitations in an ever-digital world are becoming more and more pronounced.
