About us

Rewiring America is a growing nonprofit focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. Our world-class team develops accessible, actionable data and tools. We’re the conduit for Americans to achieve energy efficiency, tackle nationwide emission goals, improve health, save money and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce. We believe in an abundant, flourishing, climate-safe future, and know that, together, we can realize one. Founded in the summer of 2020, Rewiring America’s purpose is to make electrification simple, measurable, and inevitable. Every single opportunity to replace a car, water heater, furnace, dryer, cooktop, and even lawn equipment that runs on fossil fuels is an opportunity for electrification. We are committed to using the best data and analysis to build market-transforming partnerships and tell the stories of transformation and success that people will relate to, gravitate to, and want to join. We are outcomes-oriented, focused on achieving national emissions goals, improving our health, lowering monthly bills and creating millions of clean energy jobs. We know this is the decade that matters, and that our collective success winds through and depends on all of us.

Rewiring America is honored to share that Power Forward Communities, a new coalition of which we are a member, has been awarded a $2 billion, seven-year National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Through our partnership with some of the country’s most trusted housing, climate, and community investment groups, including Habitat for Humanity International, Enterprise Community Partners, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and United Way, we’re purpose-built to help transform the housing sector, save homeowners and renters money, invest in stronger communities, and meet national climate goals. Founder and CEO, Rewiring America. Founding Partner, Purpose Venture Group. Former Obama White House. Focused on climate and economic inequality, and having a positive impact on both.

In policy as in life, it’s important to count the receipts. When it comes to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and its impact on the kitchen table decisions that tie to 42 percent of energy-related emissions, the initial receipts are in. Today, the Treasury Department released data showing that 3.4 million American families took advantage of the tax credits on clean energy and energy efficiency home upgrades last year. Not only are these tax credits good for the planet, they are good for the pocketbooks of the millions of Americans who found out about the money in their electric bank accounts from the IRA through tools like Rewiring America’s incentive calculator. (https://lnkd.in/gRyK8g_c) The kitchen table decisions that the IRA supports include how we heat our air and water, cook our food, dry our clothes, get around, and source our electricity. According to the Treasury, over 750,000 families used IRA tax credits to get rooftop solar systems — systems Rewiring America calculates will save an average of $1,550 / year on their power bills. More than 300,000 households got heat pumps to heat and cool their homes and more than 100,000 purchased heat pump water heaters. That’s more than $8 billion to American families, unlocking billions of dollars more in annual bill savings. The IRA is one of the most significant anti-inflationary policies for families in American history. And this is just the beginning. The 2023 uptake of clean energy tax credits for rooftop solar and heat pump water heaters matched Rewiring America's "Electric Potential" benchmark — the incentive uptake expected if we are to meet our climate goals by 2050. (https://lnkd.in/gw5yhtXZ) The 2023 uptake of the heat pump tax credit lags behind that benchmark, but sales of heat pumps are outstripping fossil fuel machines now. And with the IRA-funded electrification rebates coming online the rate of heat pump adoption will continue to accelerate. Oh, and with the Energy Department’s announcement today of Defense Production Act awards for domestic heat pump manufacturing, in the years ahead, the heat pumps (and rooftop solar) we buy will be made right here in the U.S.A. (https://lnkd.in/gCMuh8ES) I’m grateful to the U.S. Treasury for being transparent with the data on this generational, future-securing investment for our communities. Rewiring America looks forward to continuing to count those receipts. #rewiringamerica #electrifyeverything

Today, Wisconsin 🧀 joined New York 🗽 to become the second state in America to roll out home energy rebates from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)! Specifically, Wisconsin residents can now access up to $10,000 to upgrade their homes with better insulation and new energy efficient appliances (like heat pumps!) through the Home Energy Performance-Based Whole-House Rebate (HOMES) program. And they'll soon also have access to funds through the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) program for a wide range of clean electric home upgrades. Details here:

Monumental: “At the current pace, public fast-charging sites will outnumber gas stations in the US in about eight years — but charger momentum is only expected to accelerate. North American operators will spend a collective $6.1 billion on charging infrastructure this year, nearly double their 2023 investment, according to BloombergNEF estimates. That annual spend is expected to double again by 2030.” [📰: Bloomberg] — link to the full story is in the comments.
