Real Stories. Real People. Real Change.
About us
Street Sense Media creates content in print, film, theater, photography, audio, illustration, and more, all for the purpose of providing economic opportunity for and elevating the voices of people experiencing homelessness. The content of our media center aims to challenge perceptions of homelessness and those it affects while creating common ground upon which to build a stronger community. Our innovative approach harnesses the abilities, aspirations and hard work of men and women experiencing homelessness. We have long known that while housing and economic opportunity are distributed unevenly, talent and creativity are distributed equally, without regard to income or housing status.

Congrats to our wonderful editorial team!
Street Sense cleaned UP at D.C. SPJ's Dateline awards this week! It's been a hard year, but it was gratifying to be recognized for the important, impactful stories our writers produce. We won FIVE first places in the weekly newspaper category, for news, breaking news, business reporting, a series, and beat reporting. Kaela Roeder is officially the BEST reporter in the business with their story on last year's rent strike in Brightwood. Then one of our wonderful volunteers, Taylor Nichols, won in business for her story on a new coffee shop run by someone who was formerly homeless and donating money to queer homeless youth. Street Sense won for the second year in a row for beat reporting on encampments in D.C. Lots of the reporting from Athiyah Azeem and I centered on D.C. ramping up encampment closures. Another beat Street Sense has been on is voucher usage. I won the series category for my work to uncover that D.C. was habitually not using federally funded vouchers that could protect foster youth from homelessness. Finally, I won the breaking news category for my coverage of ERAP opening (and promptly closing) last year. We also had two stories recognized as finalists, on shelter shortages in the city (relevant once again) and D.C. returning federal grant money. Thanks so much to Will Schick for his guidance on many of these and all our lovely volunteers and readers!

We've been keeping a secret... our limited series podcast "Street Sense Says" will release this summer! Edited and produced by Rachel Dungan and co-created with vendors, episodes will explore misconceptions about homelessness and reveal the reality that people’s windows on the world aren’t always so different – regardless of where they live. The first episode will be live on June 5 on our website, Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
