Driving a shift toward humane technology that supports our well-being, democracy, and shared reality.
About us
Together with our partners, the Center for Humane Technology (CHT) is dedicated to radically reimagining our digital infrastructure. Our mission is to drive a comprehensive shift toward humane technology that supports our well-being, democracy, and shared information environment. From the dinner table to the corner office to the halls of government, our work mobilizes millions of advocates, technologists, business leaders, and policymakers through media campaigns, working groups, and high-level briefings. Our journey began in 2013 when Tristan Harris, then a Google Design Ethicist, created the viral presentation, “A Call to Minimize Distraction & Respect Users’ Attention.” The presentation, followed by two TED talks and a 60 Minutes interview, sparked the Time Well Spent movement and laid the groundwork for the founding of the Center for Humane Technology (CHT) as an independent 501c3 nonprofit in 2018. CHT was thrilled to support the development and release of the record-shattering Netflix documentary 'The Social Dilemma' from director Jeff Orlowski on the existential threats posed by social media, reaching an estimated 100 million people.

Did you see the news on Monday? A U.S. Federal court has officially declared that Google “is a monopolist,” and its dominance of online search and advertising is illegal. But Google is not the only tech company that’s been consolidating power in recent years. And the tactics for maintaining dominance in tech today are shifting. For a deep dive into how and why tech companies have been hoarding power — especially in the age of AI — check out this prescient essay by CHT’s Pete Furlong in Tech Policy Press. https://lnkd.in/gs_jy8BS #Google #tech #techpolicy #Technology #Future #Economy #Economics

Big news: the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (#KOSPA) has passed in the Senate. The House is up next. Our partners Fairplay for Kids and Parents for Safer Online Spaces have worked tirelessly to shepherd this bill so that kids can finally be shielded from harmful algorithms on social media, and enjoy safer digital experiences. While there’s still more work to be done to protect kids — especially with the rise of generative AI — today is a step in the right direction. Read our full statement here:

Last month, the Supreme Court quietly hinted that social media algorithms are a form of free speech, protected by the First Amendment. In a recent op ed The New York Times, Columbia Law Professor Tim Wu argues that it’s just the latest in a series of decisions designed to protect the interests of Big Tech. And Wu predicts the next First Amendment battleground will be #AI: “I fear that the First Amendment will be extended to protect machine speech — at considerable human cost.” Read his Op Ed and share your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/eQJPVZpK
