Did you know August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month? This is an initiative of the National (Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation) Multicultural Awareness Group to help save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ and tissue donation. Meet our patient Jayden, who received a lifesaving kidney transplant. His mom, Tiffany, was his living donor. Tiffany says when she found out she was a match for her son, there was no hesitation to donate in order to give him a 2nd chance at life. Jayden and his mom are both recovering well, and Jayden looks forward to going to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and starting fifth grade in the fall. Way to go Jayden! 💙 💚

Recently we got to welcome campers from NAWIC Philadelphia Foundation Mentoring young Women In Construction which is a free, construction industry, day camp for 7th through 12th grade girls in the Philadelphia region. They joined us at the site of our Morgan Center for Research and Innovation for a day full of activities, including a tour of the new construction, learning about the “anatomy” of a building, hearing from industry experts and designing and budgeting a retail space of their own. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to engage with future #womeninconstruction!

We're proud to announce that our kidney transplant program has performed 18 living donor transplants since July 2023, the most living donor kidney transplants ever performed at CHOP in a fiscal year. We credit the milestone in part to our involvement with the National Kidney Registry through a partnership with Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System, which provides our hospital access to a large pool of potential living kidney donors. For almost two decades, we have been at the forefront in the treatment of sickle cell disease, and played a critical role in the clinical trials that led to the recent FDA approvals of the first two gene therapies now available for eligible patients. Just last week, our first patient outside a clinical trial began the gene therapy process with our Sickle Cell and Red Cell Disorders Curative Therapy Center (CuRED). The group pictured here performed the patient’s cell collection and represents a collaborative team across the Division of Hematology, the Cellular Therapy and Transplant Section within the Division of Oncology, and many other areas of CHOP. CuRED provides comprehensive evaluation and cutting-edge treatment and guides children through exploring which treatment option is best for each individual patient.
