Eating Disorder Risks Elevated Among Women with PCOS Women with the common reproductive and metabolic condition polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) face a greater risk of developing bulimia, binge eating disorder and disordered eating, according to new research published in JCEM: https://bit.ly/3Yyowgu Women are diagnosed when they have at least two of the three key features of PCOS:   ·        Increased numbers of ovarian follicles containing immature eggs (called polycystic ovaries) seen on ultrasound;  ·        Slightly higher levels of testosterone or clinical symptoms of higher testosterone such as excess body hair; and   ·        Irregular or no menstrual periods.  “This analysis is the first time we’ve been able to confirm an increased risk of specific eating disorders, including bulimia nervosa, commonly called bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Many women with PCOS experience weight stigma, and that can be detrimental to mental health generally and contribute to disordered eating.” — Laura Cooney, MD    #PCOS

Call for Scientific Statement Topics    The Scientific Statements Subcommittee of our Research Affairs Core Committee invites suggestions of topics and chairs for future Scientific Statements: https://bit.ly/3WTyo36 Recommendations should include a short rationale for the proposed topic and the name of a Society member who is willing to chair the Statement’s writing group. Submissions are due by Saturday, August 24.    Scientific Statements position the Society as an authority on endocrine-related topics and raise awareness of the importance of endocrinology, but do not include clinical practice recommendations. After committee and expert peer review, plus a member comment period, Scientific Statements are published in a Society journal. Past Statements are available for review: https://bit.ly/3tAweVu

Summer Cookout: A Social Engagement Team (SET) Production Our staff were able to enjoy a late July treat with our summer cookout! What’s better than summertime BBQ and ice cream? During this two-hour event, staff relaxed by watching the US Women’s Gymnastics Team compete in the Olympics. Some staff carried the competitive spirit to a variety of games such as Connect 4, Jenga, Uno and Putt-Putt. Special thanks to our SET volunteers who develop creative activities for staff enjoyment.
