Green Space Connections, a Helmsley grantee, recently broke ground on new outdoor space for Castle Hill Houses, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing development. Green Space Connections works with local communities to design and vote on outdoor spaces that meet residents' needs. Beyond Castle Hill Houses, three other NYCHA developments were selected as part of this initiative because they showed indicators of high health needs and climate vulnerability. Green space improves both physical and mental health, as well as reduces the impacts of climate-related events like heat waves and flooding. Read more about this initiative: https://bit.ly/4fFg6dm

We’re excited to share that Urban Pathways has been awarded a $300,000 grant by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust! With this grant, Urban Pathways will serve as a member of the Steering Committee for the Collaborative on Housing for Health, giving us the opportunity to expand housing and health models. Ultimately, this generous investment from The Helmsley Charitable Trust will aid in increasing access to longer term housing for health efforts, leverage public funds for this work, establish a clearer picture of unmet housing for health needs, and generate recommendations to improve the placement process. Thank you, Helmsley for supporting our mission to combat homelessness through housing and support services!

Fibrostenosis is a complication of Crohn’s disease characterized by fibrosis (intestinal scarring), inflammation, and narrowing of the intestine — which has limited treatment options and often requires surgical intervention. The Stenosis Therapy and Anti-Fibrotic Research (STAR) Consortium, a global investigator group focused on developing pathways to improve the care and treatment of people living with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease, recently published “A global consensus on the definitions, diagnosis and management of fibrostenotic small bowel Crohn’s disease in clinical practice.” The Consensus Statement is a critical step in providing clear recommendations on definitions, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of people affected with this disease. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKRTi3MC Helmsley supports the STAR Consortium and their efforts to develop anti-fibrotic therapies for patients with Crohn’s disease through grants awarded to Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Alimentiv. #CrohnsDisease #Fibrostenosis

A recent study from the Fr1da Study Group at Helmholtz Munich and Technische Universität Dresden in Germany found that COVID-19 infection is associated with an increased rate of progression to clinical type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children with early-stage, presymptomatic T1D. More research is needed to better understand the association between viral infections and the development of T1D. However, this study adds compelling evidence to support the link to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Read this Helmsley-supported study: https://lnkd.in/e5Ugp47X #Type1Diabetes #T1D #COVID19

Today Hawaii became the ninth state to receive support from our Rural Healthcare Program. Our first grant goes to Wilcox Medical Center on Kauai and provides $10.6 million in support as they expand and develop their imaging programs and capabilities. Our Rural Healthcare Program has granted over $700 million to organizations and initiatives in Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and two U.S. Pacific territories. In Hawaii, we aim to further expand our mission and bring better care closer to home for more Americans. This grant will enhance state-of-the-art care on Kauai through the purchase of a new MRI machine, upgrades to the existing X-ray room and technology, and support the Family Medicine Residency Program on Kauai. “This grant helps ensure that Kauai’s primary hospital has the latest and greatest equipment and training opportunities to serve patients," Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer said when announcing the grant. We recently expanded our grantmaking into American Samoa, a U.S. Pacific territory with limited access to healthcare. Patients in need of MRI machines previously had to fly to New Zealand or Hawaii for scans; with our recent grant that pays for the first-ever MRI on American Samoa, they'll be able to get them on island.
