About us
More than half-a-century of artistic excellence and community engagement has made the Dallas Opera a major factor in the international cultural reputation of Dallas and a major contributor to the economic impact of the performing arts in North Texas. the Dallas Opera has presented many international stars in their American debuts, including Dame Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé, Jon Vickers, and Plácido Domingo, as well as designer-director Franco Zeffirelli. A champion of new work, the Dallas Opera has also presented the American premieres of five operas and additional world premieres. Most recently, the company commissioned composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer to create a new opera based on Herman Melville's 19th century novel "Moby-Dick." In 1957, civic leaders worked diligently to found a resident opera company in Dallas, including Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Miller, Jr., Dallas Morning News critic John Rosenfield, and William A. McKenzie. They approached Lawrence Kelly, formerly associated with Chicago's Lyric Theater, about establishing an opera company in Dallas. Mr. Kelly agreed to pursue that goal and the Dallas Civic Opera was chartered in March of 1957. Mr. Kelly named his long-time associate, Maestro Nicola Rescigno, as artistic director. The Dallas Civic Opera opened with an inaugural concert by legendary Greek soprano Maria Callas in November of that year, and a production of what was then a Rossini rarity, The Italian Girl in Algiers.

In closing out the 2023/24 season, four new members have been elected to TDO’s Board of Directors. TDO Board Chair Quincy Roberts welcomed them, saying, “We are thrilled that these four outstanding individuals have joined The Dallas Opera’s Board. We welcome their leadership, as well as their dedication to reaching new audiences and engaging with our community, and look forward to seeing them continue to share their love of opera with the greater Dallas region. Roger Carroll—a subscriber and passionate opera lover—has been a TDO trustee since 2018 and brings decades of leadership and service in the former Dallas Opera Guild to his new role on the Board. The native Texan was appointed by the Dallas City Council to the Cultural Affairs Commission in 2009, where he served four terms. Milene Carvalho has served as a TDO trustee since 2017, and is an ardent opera lover who is committed to expanding its audience, community engagement, and access to the art form. As the leader of EY’s Americas Consumer Risk Consulting practice, she works at the intersection of emerging technology, data, innovation, and risk management. Dr. Michael Lindsey is a lawyer and clinical psychologist at Nestor Consultants, Inc., a consulting practice he founded in 1985, as well as a lifelong music and arts lover. He is a lecturer in the department of psychology at Southern Methodist University and adjunct faculty for The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges in Reno, Nevada. Malcolm Winspear is a devoted opera fan who is continuing his parents’—Margot and Bill Winspear—legacy of supporting world class performing arts in Dallas. He became involved with TDO when he and his wife Jill moved back to Dallas in 2019.

The Dallas Opera reposted this
What a joy it was to visit an elementary school last week and watch The Dallas Opera perform for their students. While I write dozens of grants talking about our amazing in-school education programs (led by the equally amazing Kristian Roberts) I don’t often have the chance to see them in action.
