  • Ben Ombati, BSN, RN, 2024 Recipient of the Nurse of the Year Award, works in the Behavioral Health Department at the New Point Campus of Trinitas. “I’ve always had this innate feeling of the need to give back---be it to family, friends or strangers, and being a voice for the voiceless. What better career than this one?” And that’s just what he has done for the past eight years as an RN, and more recently as a preceptor orienting newly hired nurses for the past five years. “I can’t see myself doing anything else.” What makes him a successful health care worker is being a chameleon, but in a positive sense, he says. “I believe the ability to adapt to challenging situations, patiently and effectively listen to patients in crisis, take charge and lead when issues arise is my superpower.” Although he has had other opportunities, he says, “Trinitas is basically a home away from home. The amazingly supportive team, with a never-ending willingness to help each other ensure patients’ well-being, is what makes me love working at Trinitas. I don’t think I’d find the same team elsewhere.” Every May, Trinitas recognizes nurses like Ben that go above and beyond to deliver compassionate patient care with Nursing Excellence Awards. • Lindsey Torres, RN, the 2024 recipient of the Rising Star Award, always thought she wanted to be a teacher until one day when she was still in high school. “I was at a doctor’s appointment and I looked at my mom and said, ‘maybe I’ll be a nurse.’ And I never looked back.” In the summer of 2022, after graduating from Trinitas School of Nursing, she participated in the Externship program that made her sure she had made the right decision. “I was in awe seeing how everyone works together. I knew I wanted to start my career in a place where I would be supported.” Now she enjoys working in the Oncology Unit. She added, “My superpower at work is communicating with my patients. I take pride in getting to know a patient’s whole story!” Every May, Trinitas recognizes nurses like Lindsey that go above and beyond to deliver compassionate patient care with Nursing Excellence Awards. • Celia Zapico, BSN, RN, 2024 Recipient of the Antonio Reis Nursing Excellence Award, works in the Same Day Unit and in Pre-Admission testing. Before becoming a nurse, Celia was a manager/buyer for a three-store chain pharmacy while studying to become a pharmacist. But after getting married and having two children, her education was interrupted. When it came time to get back to work, she says, “I knew I wanted to do something with healthcare and fell upon nursing and absolutely knew it was what I was supposed to be doing. I love the quote, ‘It’s a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together.’ It truly has been a blessing for me, and I hope my former patients feel the same about the care I gave them.” Celia, a 2007 graduate of Trinitas School of Nursing, says, “It is a priority that my patients understand the surgical procedure they will be having and that I make them feel comfortable enough to ask any questions or talk about concerns they may have.” While she has had opportunities to work in other hospitals, she has chosen to stay at Trinitas. She says, “My superpower is the realization that everyone we meet will somehow give us the opportunity to learn a new skill, a new technique, a new way to communicate, and it is our duty to pass this on to other co-workers. This is what truly delivers the best possible patient care. My priority is and will always be the patient. They will always come first.” Every May, Trinitas recognizes nurses like Celia that go above and beyond to deliver compassionate patient care with Nursing Excellence Awards.
