When historically Black college and university (HBCU) presidents founded UNCF (United Negro College Fund) in 1944, only small numbers of Black students were admitted to predominantly White American colleges and universities. Our founders knew that a college education was important, and they created UNCF to raise dollars to support HBCUs and the hundreds of thousands of students who attended them. For 79 years, UNCF has worked tirelessly to support America’s HBCUs and their students. We have raised over $5 billion and supported more than 500,000 students on their college journeys. HBCUs have built Black America’s middle class, and UNCF scholarships have helped students pay for their college degrees and move upward economically. Along the way, HBCUs and UNCF have urged all American colleges and universities to provide educational opportunity to Black and other students of color. Why? Because we believe that all higher education institutions have an important role to play to ensure equitable educational opportunity for students who, because of race, have been marginalized and excluded. 📢 The Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling will close the door to educational opportunity for many Black students and students of color who want to attend non-HBCUs. With this ruling, more students will turn to HBCUs. America needs HBCUs now more than ever, and UNCF needs all Americans’ support to do our important work. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.
About us
UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. During its 80-year existence, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion and helped more than 500,000 students not just attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders. To serve youth, the community and the nation, UNCF supports students’ education and development through scholarships and other programs, supports and strengthens its 37 member colleges and universities, and advocates for the importance of minority education and college readiness. While totaling only 3% of all colleges and universities, UNCF institutions and other historically Black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 15% of bachelor’s degrees, 5% of master’s degrees, 10% of doctoral degrees and 19% of all STEM degrees earned by Black students in higher education. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 50,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country. Its logo features the UNCF torch of leadership in education and its widely recognized trademark, ‟A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”® Learn more at UNCF.org or for continuous updates and news, follow UNCF on Instagram at @UNCF.

Be Like Mike: Michael R. Bloomberg, the billionaire and former New York City mayor, has set a new benchmark for philanthropic support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with his historic $600 million donation to the country's four leading Black medical schools. This unprecedented investment will have a generational impact, significantly bolstering the endowments of institutions like Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, and our member institution Morehouse School of Medicine - all of which play a crucial role in educating a disproportionate share of Black doctors in the United States. Everyone with the means to do so should strive to be like "Mike" - to leverage their resources in service of creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. Bloomberg's $600 million gift sets a new standard that philanthropists across America would do well to emulate. #bloomberg #philantropymonth #uncf #belikemike

Whether you’re 18 or 81, everyone needs a will. But did you know that nearly 68% of American adults don’t have an updated will plan? August is National #MakeAWillMonth, and a good time to think about your plan to protect your loved ones and your legacy. It’s also a great opportunity to include a bequest to UNCF in your will. A bequest to UNCF helps ensure that deserving students get to and through college. For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/evPhaWrk. #UNCF #MakeAWillMonth #LeaveALegacy #BetterFutures
