At a time when credit card interest rates are super high, more Americans find themselves carrying credit card debt from month to month, a new survey suggests. This comes at a time when the average credit card interest rate in the U.S. is 24.92% – the highest since LendingTree began tracking rates monthly in 2019, the online lending marketplace reported Friday. Hurricanes and tropical storms can be really hard on birds. As Debby moved up the Gulf Coast of Florida, bird watchers reported a flurry of unusual birds driven in by the storm, but one bird caught up in the storm was wearing a GPS tracker, which provided unique information about exactly what was happening with the bird as Debby developed. This migrating swallow-tailed kite's journey provided a rare look inside the story of what happens to these birds. Now the hope is that she will rest up and try again to make her long journey, but her transmitter last showed she was in Georgia, the opposite direction! We appreciate Ken Meyer and Gina Kent with the Avian Research Conservation Institute for sharing her story with us. Thanks also to the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology for the resources they provide. Her story is also a reminder of the value provided by the national wildlife refuge system and other conservation lands. Read it in USA TODAY https://lnkd.in/ei4wnwfz

A large marjority of Americans love the idea of Supreme Court reform -- until they're linked to Joe Biden. When reforms including a binding code of conduct and term limits are associated with the president, Republican voters see them as dangerous for democracy. A code of conduct had the support of 70% of Republicans, 76% of independents and 89% of Democrats. Big majorities also favor 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices. But views of the court in this critical election year split sharply on ideological lines. My latest, at USA TODAY https://lnkd.in/enmxjvzQ

For Nalini Rau, Hindu symbolism is already on Harris' side. During this election year, Rau had been praying to the Hindu mother Goddess Devi for leaders who look out for everyone. “For women, for minorities, for everyone,” said Rau, who moved from India in the 1980s and now teaches Indian classical dance in New York. But even as she volunteered to register new voters, she wasn't feeling very optimistic about the presidential race until Kamala Harris, whose middle name is Devi, became a candidate. Trump's running mate JD Vance has mocked Harris as a childless cat lady, (though she actually has two stepchildren). In many of the stories about Hindu mythology, a Devi vanquishes an egotistical opponent. Often, she’s riding a lion or a tiger ‒ in other words, a big cat, Rau-Murthy said, chuckling at the parallels. Asian Americans have been the fastest-growing group of eligible voters in the United States over roughly the past two decades. Their number has grown by 15%, or about 2 million eligible voters in just the past four years. That’s faster than the 3% growth rate for all eligible voters during that timeframe, according to Pew Research. Still, voter registration among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has been 10% below the national average. In battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, the number of Asian Americans who cast their ballot in 2020 exceeded the presidential margin of victory, according to AAPI Data. Turning them out this year could put Harris in the White House, Narasimhan said. USA TODAY
