Creating a path forward to realize a circular economy for plastics in the United States.

About us

The U.S. Plastics Pact is bringing together businesses, government entities, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders to work collectively toward a common vision of a circular economy for plastics, as outlined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Initiative. This vision aims to ensure that plastics never become waste by eliminating the plastics we don’t need, innovating to ensure that the plastics we do need are reusable, recyclable, or compostable, and circulating all the plastic items we use to keep them in the economy and out of the environment.

The U.S. Plastics Pact is thrilled to announce the release of Roadmap 2.0! Building upon Roadmap to 2025, Roadmap 2.0 continues carrying forward the Targets, Outcomes, and Deliverables not yet fully achieved, pushing further those that have been successful, and implementing new, necessary objectives born from what was learned during the original strategic plan.   Roadmap 2.0 was designed to drive transformative change and accelerate progress across the entire plastics value chain to address plastic waste at its source and enable a just transition to a circular economy.   By working together across the plastics value chain, Activators have already:   — Decreased problematic and unnecessary materials from packaging from 14% to 8% — Increased the amount of reusable, recyclable, or compostable plastic packaging placed on the market from 37% to 47.7% — Increased use of postconsumer recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content in plastic packaging from 7% to 9.4% As with the original Roadmap to 2025, these new Targets are interconnected; the success of one Target relies on the successful progress of the others. Evolved from its predecessor, the Targets of Roadmap 2.0 include:   1️⃣ Eliminate all items on the Problematic and Unnecessary Materials List and reduce the use of virgin plastic by 30% by 2030 2️⃣ Design and manufacture 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable 3️⃣ Effectively recycle 50% of plastic packaging and establish the necessary framework to recycle or compost packaging at scale 4️⃣  Achieve an average of 30% postconsumer recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content across all plastic packaging 5️⃣ Identify viable reusable packaging systems and increase their implementation and scale by 2030, as part of reducing the use of virgin plastic The U.S. Plastics Pact and our Activators continue working towards a future where plastics and packaging exist within a circular economy. #RoadmapTo2025 #RoadmapToCircularity #USPlasticsPact Read Roadmap 2.0 today: https://lnkd.in/gcV8mD7

    • The cover page of Roadmap 2.0. Background is of a road through mountains, with the centered, all-capitalized title reading "U.S. Plastics Pact" in white smaller font above similarly styled but larger "Roadmap 2.0." in the center of the page. There is a dotted targeted path resembling the period in "2.0." that makes a right angle, going off the right side of the page. The bottom header has a white background and has the U.S. Plastics Pact logo on the far left. To more of the right, grey, all capitalized text reads "In Partnership With:" and the partnerships logos of The Recycling Partnership and WWF are beneath it. To the right of these logos reads "As Part Of:" with the Plastics Pact Network logo placed, and the text "The Plastics Pact Network Convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WRAP."

Are you interested in more recycling options? ♻️ Over the past year, U.S. Pact Activators D6 and Walmart have been continuously opening free Community Recycling Units across the South and educating communities! These units are self-service drop-off containers for recyclables and can be found at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, making it easier for individuals to engage. The Community Recycling Unit accepts six different waste streams: aluminum, clear plastic containers, home cleaning and beauty product bottles, plastic bags and films, plastic bottles, and rigid food packaging. Amazing circularity initiative by D6 and Walmart to raise awareness and accessibility to recycling! 👏 Find out more about what materials are accepted and not accepted here: https://lnkd.in/gMaMDqu7

The U.S. Plastics Pact and Canada Plastics Pact hosted our third Film & Flex technical workshop to help brand owners convert to monomaterial film structures that comply with the design guidelines to make progress toward Target 2. Today’s session focused on room temp applications such as snacks, cereals, coffee, and confectionary items. Converters Mondi Group, Printpack and Tempo Flexible Packaging presented on innovative, high performing monomaterial film structures that work in challenging applications. OEM’s BW Packaging (Hayssen) and Coesia (R.A Jones) shared about work they are doing to help customers overcome machinability challenges in the conversion to monomaterial formats, which was followed by open Q&A from the audience. It will take the full value chain working together to achieve circularity for plastic packaging, and it is exciting to see these companies working hard to support their customers in achieving their circularity goals.   Thank you to each of these companies for your leadership in innovating circular solutions and helping brand owners make progress on their design commitments. And thank you to each of our wonderful speakers – Chris Simmers, MBA, Daniel Cluskey, Neil MacFayden, Michelle Bryson, and Phil Johnson– for sharing your knowledge and expertise! As we navigate the complexities of establishing a circular economy for plastics and packaging, Plastics News' Don Loepp highlights the U.S. Plastics Pact Activators' commitment to perseverance, transparency, and accountability — despite unmet sustainability targets. In fact, the extension of our ambitious 2030 deadlines underscores continuous opportunities in collaboration and innovation. The deliverables of the US Plastics Pact require collective effort from brands, retailers, and consumers — and our Activators are determined to meet our collective goals. Loepp writes, "These are still ambitious goals, and now I think the Pact members have a better idea how to achieve them. That's encouraging. I remember plenty of cases from previous decades where industry and brand owners quietly stepped away from sustainability goals once they realized they were too expensive or difficult to achieve." With Roadmap 2.0 on the horizon, we have the chance to reassess our strategies and reinforce our commitments. It's time to focus on tangible actions to ensure environmental and social justice, enhance infrastructure, develop alternative materials, and foster circularity.
