Finn Enke, a professor of history and gender & women's studies, first came to UW-Madison to create an undergraduate certificate in LGBTQ+ studies--a certificate that more than 40 students graduate with each year. Enke now teaches several courses that look at history through the lens of gender, sexuality and identity. “It’s really recognizing that the history of sexuality is intimately and integrally a facet of literally everything else we can think of,” Enke says. “I think that it’s interesting to see over time, how gender diversity looks across different communities.” #histoey #LGBTQ #WeAreLS

WOW. In the art history world, curating the biennial exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York is considered among the highest honors an art historian can achieve. The 2026 Whitney Biennial will be curated by not one, but TWO L&S Department of Art History alums: Drew Sawyer (BA '05) and Marcela Guerrero (MA, Ph.D.' 15) the first curator of Latin American art at the Whitney. Both will be back on campus next February as part of a series of workshops to mark the Department of Art History's 100th Anniversary. #arthistory #WeAreLS

The Center for Limnology is front and center on the cover of the August issue of Madison Magazine. Center Director Jake Vander Zanden talks extensively about the environmental challenges--think algal blooms, declining water quality and invasive species--facing Lake Mendota, the most studied lake in the world. “Science alone is not going to solve the problem,” he says. “But we need the science so we have an understanding of what we need to do.” #limnology #WeAreLS
