Brownstown recently became the first municipality in Jackson County to utilize solar energy to reduce utility costs. Town council members held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the wastewater treatment plant for the new solar facility. The project, initiated by the late Councilman Mark Reynolds, aligns with a $7.26 million sanitary sewer project, enhancing the plant with solar power and LED lighting. Executed by Veregy, the 193.6 kWDC solar plant cost $913,632 and is expected to save $1,330,228 over 20 years. The town will also receive a $257,935 federal Inflation Reduction Act payment in 2025 to offset costs.
