Virginia Symphony Orchestra reposted this
Congratulations to Aleea Slappy Wilson (yes, Shakespeare!) and her team’s hugely successful 2024 Evolve Summit: Advancing Equity and Togetherness. They are celebrating the five year anniversary of the City of Norfolk, VA office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Every speaker was knowledgeable and had great insight. Each item on the agenda was meaningful and well executed and we were able to take away many practical tools and ideas for our respective work. Patricia Lerma Bracknell Rob "Butch" Bracknell Danica Royster all represented well!

The NAACP's theme for Black History Month this year is African Americans in the Arts! We at the Virginia Symphony Orchestra would like to celebrate a recent guest conductor we had the pleasure of hosting, Dr. Henry Panion III. Below is a link to a documentary with Dr. Panion on PBS. https://lnkd.in/e8anqT5J A SYMPHONY CELEBRATION: THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA WITH DR. HENRY PANION, III A Symphony Celebration: The Blind Boys of Alabama A truly unique television program bringing together songs performed by musical legends The Blind Boys of Alabama and a full symphony orchestra. Throughout the program, a documentary storytelling thread uses small vignettes to connect the artists and their songs. Beautifully orchestrated and conducted by Dr. Henry Panion III, A SYMPHONY CELEBRATION focuses on messages of humanity, peace, and love.

What a privilege to partner with Teens With a Purpose!
Last night Teens With a Purpose held their annual gala. This year's theme was Hope Chasers! Nikki Thorpe, Diversity and Engagement, Alex Chen, Personnel Manager, Meredith Arndt, Annual Fund Manager, and LaVoris Pace, VSO Board Member dressed in their finest and helped celebrate one of our favorite community partners. The teens produced dance ensembles, poetic and musical performances, and spoken word. Nikki and Lavoris were also both presenters for Fund-A-Teen, an auction where audience members are asked to donate money to the teen "movemakers" in the program. Al Rooker from the Today Show started the bidding off with a generous donation. It was truly a memorable event, we can't wait until next year!

Renowned composer, educator, and friend to the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) Dr. Adolphus Hailstork was presented as the 2023 Arts Supporter of the Year. Presenting the award to Dr. Hailstork was our very own Music Librarian of 23 years, Paula Bonds. Paula was the previous winner of the award and was honored in 2021, but plans for a public event fell victim to the pandemic. Paula is a pillar in the Virginia music community and we are beyond lucky to have her on our team. JoAnn Falletta, the VSO’s Connie and Marc Jacobson Music Director Laureate sums it up this way, “Not only is Paula Bonds a brilliant and dedicated musician, but she is also one of the most beautiful human beings I have ever had the privilege of knowing.” Congratulations to Dr. Hailstork and Paula Bonds on this remarkable achievement!

VSO's Fall TQM (Total Quality Music) sessions have been completed! Our next scheduled performance/coaching session will be in January 2024. VSO musicians Allison Kim, violin, and Carter Melin, cello, performed several pieces and demonstrated and discussed vibrato, practice strategies, bowing styles, and non-verbal communication within a chamber ensemble. After the performance, the VSO musicians listened to and coached the orchestra program to improve their performance. The three Norfolk Public schools that received this program so far are Ghent School, Northside Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School. In the Spring, these schools will attend a FREE VSO concert! The Total Quality Music program is made possible by a collaboration with NPS & the VSO with a generous donation by Minette Cooper.
