How are U.S. shoppers’ expectations evolving? Immediate accessibility and custom “do it for me” experiences will become the norm: They want retailers to anticipate their needs, reduce decision-making and deliver at exactly the right moment. As Suresh Kumar notes in his interview with Jason Del Rey for Fortune, the way we discover, buy, and receive products is set to dramatically change in the next 5-10 years to meet these expectations. Everything great about eCommerce – no lines, easy search and find, personalized recommendations – must be available in the store. And everything great about the store – try on, customer service, instant purchase – needs to be available from home. The retail landscape has undergone numerous changes over the past decade. Adaptability, immediate accessibility and custom “do it for me” experiences will no longer be longer luxuries – they are absolute necessities. Today Walmart released its inaugural State of Adaptive Retail Report with Morning Consult, revealing four emerging trends shaping the future of the retail industry. Among the discoveries: 💡 Shoppers want retailers to handle the thinking while they focus on buying: 38% of shoppers say they want a virtual personal shopper. 💡 Shopping now blends seamlessly with daily life: Nearly 80% of shoppers made online purchases while multitasking in the past six months. 💡 Consumers crave a mix of online convenience and in-store tangibility: Nearly half prefer virtual try-ons over traditional dressing rooms and say they’d buy more clothes if a great virtual try-on experience were available. Our exit technology is making waves! Progressive Grocer has recognized Sam's Club with the 2024 GroceryTech Innovation Award for a Large Chain Retailer. This accolade acknowledges our innovative efforts to deliver new levels of convenience to our members through experiences including Scan & Go and our seamless exit technology. Advances in GenAI, AI and computer vision are enabling us to improve experiences throughout members' shopping journeys, from entry to exit. Our seamless exit experience, for example, uses a sophisticated layering of smart hardware and software, including cameras, computer vision models and algorithms to interpret visual information collected as members walk toward the exit, compare that data with tens of thousands of products listed in our inventory systems, and then match the cart with a receipt. By automating the exit process and eliminating the need for manual scanning, we’ve been able to streamline the entire checkout process, with members leaving the club 23% faster. Congrats to Lingfeng Zhang, Matt Lindsey, Craig Robinson, Colin Mitchell, Daren Goodroe, Yifan Zhou, Feiyun (Jerry) Zhu, Evgeniia Sorokina, Michele East, Mike Schubert, Mingquan Yuan, Mahesh Devireddy, Paul Lobo, Piyush Goel, wei wang, Rogelio Macedo, MS, Shaelyn Valencia, Vince Cucco, SSM, PMP and Brett McCausland for winning this award. Also, shout-out to the broader #SamsTech team for their dedication in exploring innovative solutions to improve member experiences and provide an unparalleled shopping experience! #TeamWalmart #RetailInnovation

Innovation meets convenience at Sam's Club with our state-of-the-art exit technology! Over half our members are already enjoying our seamless exit experience at more than 120 locations. By eliminating the need for manual receipt checks, we're reducing wait times and congestion at the exit. The best part? Members are leaving the club 23% faster! Here's how it works: Members simply walk through the exit archways. As they pass underneath the archway, cameras capture images of the cart, and our computer vision models analyze the visual information to detect items within the cart. By cross-referencing this data with our inventory systems, the system can match the cart to the receipt in seconds. To ensure the highest levels of accuracy, we continuously train our computer vision models using millions of images of Sam’s Club items in various positions and lighting. Over time, we expect our system to become even more advanced, enabling it to handle even more complicated scenarios. Check it out next time you visit a club: https://lnkd.in/d_7VjWWC #RetailInnovation #SamsTech #ComputerVision #AI

Last week we announced a significant milestone: Walmart Luminate is expanding internationally beginning with Walmex in Mexico followed by Walmart Canada later this year. Our approach to building solutions starts with a platform-first mindset, meaning we build a great product once, and then re-use its core components across the enterprise. The global expansion of Walmart Luminate is the latest example of this methodology. International markets can now effortlessly “plug in” to the platform and begin operating immediately, enabling the company to extend our innovative retail solutions to new markets and empower our merchants and suppliers with a shared view of the customer and our products—from the physical to the digital shelf.
