Think you love American history? Shane Hunt has watched all 378 episodes of GBH's American Experience PBS. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Hunt realized he wanted to watch something that “would give me more optimism and make me better once we got to the other side of the pandemic.” So in the first three months of stay-at-home orders, before he could go back to the office in the summer, he tried to watch an "American Experience" episode every day. “I said to my wife, ‘I obviously can’t continue to watch one every day, but I’ve really enjoyed this. The ones I’ve watched made me smarter and a better citizen,’” he said. These are Hunt's top five "American Experience" films: - “The Kennedys,” 1992 - “Reagan,” 1998 - “The Transcontinental Railroad,” 2003 - “Walt Disney,” 2015 - “Last Days in Vietnam,” 2015 - “The Blinding of Isaac Woodard,” 2021 Read more about this remarkable accomplishment in Current: News for Public Media: https://bit.ly/3WAhwgO

GBH News and PRX's "The Big Dig" podcast has been honored with a 2024 Preservation Achievement Award by the Boston Preservation Alliance! The nine-episode series hosted by Ian Coss examines America’s most expensive highway project, Boston’s Big Dig, and according to the Boston Preservation Alliance, is "sparking new conversations about the future of urban infrastructure and resilience." This award cites the immense archival and journalistic work that went into the production, and the awareness the podcast has brought to light on planning, development, and climate risk management. The "Big Dig" podcast team "sifted through over 40 years of material, interviewed more than one hundred community members, and reviewed countless hours of archival video and audio. The result is not just a story about highways, but a broader picture of American infrastructure and institutions at play, including racial issues, redlining, and corruption." Established by the Boston Preservation Alliance, the Preservation Achievement Award is given to individuals and projects that have made significant contributions to the preservation of Boston’s architectural or cultural heritage. GBH News' own Jeremy Siegel competed in gymnastics at a national level for nearly a decade. That high-flying time has been on his mind with the Paris Olympics underway - both the thrill and the risk. Jeremy shared his reflections in an essay this week: "There are few sports where the fear of injury — even death — is ever present. Gymnastics is one of them. That's why I love it. And that's why I quit it." Here are some photos from that story. Read it in full here: https://bit.ly/3WKXDVo

What if you turned sad desk lunch into a daily appointment with a former NASA researcher to learn about engineering? As part of NOVA | PBS's "Building Stuff" initiative, which aims to highlight the essential role engineering plays in the world around us, GBH's NOVA is inviting the public to join Dr. Nehemiah Mabry (“Dr. Nee”) every weekday at 1pm ET on Twitch for a livestream featuring engineering gameplay, interactive expert interviews, and virtual field trips. In its debut streams, “Building Stuff” on Twitch featured engaging content such as Kerbal Space Program sessions, where Dr. Nee and guest engineer Elio Morillo from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory tackled simulated spaceflight challenges. This interactive format allows viewers to participate actively, posing questions and influencing gameplay decisions in real-time.
