Joined C-Span this morning to talk independent candidates and voters, the impact that each may have in the 2024 elections, and the technology and community the team at Good Party is building to make it possible for alternatives to the two party system to run, win and serve this year and into the future. Hey y’all, specifically my digital native female identifying friends in responsible tech- With the support of the amazing organizers at All Tech is Human, we are putting together a channel for young women in DC who are all about Responsible Tech to come together and solve tech’s wickedest issues (or rant about them.) Through our quasi-group-chat-slack-channel we will have a safe space to convene for, but not limited to- - Hosting informal happy hours and salon like dinners - Setting up remote co-working sessions - Identifying areas for cross-organizational collaboration on projects that matter to us - Celebrating each other's wins - Planning how to strengthen the pipeline for women in responsible tech And, of course, what I am most excited about- making friends with people who won’t judge you for crying about a lack of comprehensive data privacy legislation in this country! This is for anyone in DC who’s looking to blend a bit of activism with tech, inspired by what All Tech Is Human stands for. If you’ve been looking for a way to mesh your tech interests with making a positive impact (and meet some awesome people along the way), this could be it. Interested? Fill out this form! Got questions? Message me! Let's make this tech space a bit more us. Help me recruit by sharing with your networks!! Xo https://lnkd.in/eBe2aHrK

Beyond the bigger headlines, our team picked out a few smaller but interesting announcements from the 2024 federal budget. One of them was them was the collection of measures spread throughout the budget to reduce the "administrative burden" or "time tax" of dealing with government to access services and benefits, especially for people with lower incomes. To me, the most interesting is the plan to automatically open RESP accounts on behalf of children by the time they turn four to make sure they don't miss out on Canada Learning Bond/CESG payments to help them save for post-secondary. This is money that today reaches just over 40% of eligible kids. If it works, not only will it mean cutting through red tape that is holding back kids in low-income families from accessing RESPs, it also will test a new way of designing programs to reach people. To read more about the smaller stories that caught our eye: https://lnkd.in/gnb7PTPS Or some of our thoughts on broader themes of Budget 2024: https://lnkd.in/gtmXCdme

Lura Forcum and I have spent the past 10 months looking at voter realignment and polarization. What we found is that while we like to group voters by their party identification and political ideology, there are stronger forces that tie Americans together - values, interest in civic participation and community engagement. This research provides a roadmap for moving beyond an "us vs. them" framework in politics, encouraging a more nuanced understanding of the electorate and their needs. https://lnkd.in/dv5N5BNV Thanks to Heart+Mind Strategies (Dee Allsop Jaclyn Crawford Tyler-Joseph B. and Carlos Elordi) for their work on this study.

Earth Day is coming up, and I couldn't think of a better time to highlight one of my favorite orgs working to make earth a little better: Footprint Project. As an advisor to Footprint I've had the privilege to share in the growth of the org and see their successes as they work to decarbonize disaster response. Last year I saw it in response to the fires in Maui and the tornadoes in Mississippi. Today, 10 hubs on Maui are still running their operations off of solar microgrids and exploring new models of recovery that give deeper meaning to the phrase “build back greener.” Communities in climate crisis deserve access to clean energy in their most vulnerable moments. We know that more climate related disasters are coming and we need to be prepared to break negative feedback loops of responding to disasters with fossil fuel generation where we can. Footprint's model also envisions a better world for all communities, especially those who are often left behind in disaster response. Disaster response is inherently an equity and justice issue. As you think about your or your institution's commitments to supporting growing organizations, either donations or in-kind (Footprint accepts renewable energy tech donations!), please consider them this year! https://lnkd.in/eKimRNHh

Spitfire and Kristen Grimm have launched a new project, Best-Case Scenario, to strengthen our social norm for safe and sound civic spaces that are free of violence and threats of violence for everyone, everywhere -- from libraries and school boards to city council and campuses to voting booths. Civic spaces are essential. Efforts to solve homelessness, address climate change and reform big systems like criminal justice and education require community engagement from hearings to public comment sessions. We want people to engage. But if these community engagement efforts trigger divisive and violent reactions (think of book banning and the politics over just using the bathroom), this will have a chilling effect on the very people we want to engage. We can have violence-free, safe and sound civic spaces. In a time of increasing division, some are planning for the worst-case scenario. We must not forget the best-case scenario is still possible and plan to make that our reality. To strengthen the norm of nonviolence, we need leaders across academia, civil society, government and the private sector to see this as a core part of their leadership. Using resources from experts who know how to de-escalate and cool temperatures, Spitfire and Kristen will share out lessons learned. First up is seven actions leaders can take to build civil discourse not discord. https://lnkd.in/eU3A4J5e

Read our latest proxy season update for detailed information about how your proxy votes can support a guardrail that prohibits poverty wages that expand companies' margins by squeezing our economy and your diversified portfolio. We currently have three shareholder proposals pending that ask Walmart, Target, and Kroger to pay a #LivingWage. All three companies’ starting wages are insufficient to meet the subsistence needs of a single adult with no children, even in areas with the lowest cost of living. This exacerbates the inequality that slows down our economy and endangers long-term, diversified investors.

ICYMI the Supreme Court recently overturned a legal precedent known as the "Chevron doctrine" or "Chevron deference" that has guided how the US implements law through regulations for the past 40 years. This will require increased Congressional capacity. THE GOOD NEWS IS, and you know I always have a silver lining, Congress has shown it can be ready for this new challenge. Congress is now more empowered to expand upon its recent efforts to modernize, grow and better support its workforce, and upgrade how it uses technology to legislate. Read the linked testimony below to learn more. (And thanks for your interest and support!)

How effective would the labels for consumer broadband for #wired as well as #wireless mandated by the Federal Communications Commission in the #US be? This is a question that has been on the minds of many. Just like #foodlabels, these aim to empower #consumers with actionable #information about the #broadband service they are purchasing, such as #speed, #price, and #data caps. The idea is to enhance #consumerwelfare through #competition, #choice and #transparency, including but not limited to the Quality of Service. However, the effectiveness of these labels in achieving their intended goals remains to be seen. Would it enable or stifle #innovation in terms of #traiff plans? Should Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI) consider something like this in #India? What do you think?
