  • Integrating Learning Into Work: Design the Context, Not Just the Technology (Lead chapter in Computer-Mediated Learning For Workforce Development)

    IGI Global

The success of learning interventions – both whether people engage with them and whether they ultimately translate (i.e., “transfer”) into improved performance on the job—is highly context dependent. It is therefore critical to design the context, not just the technology, of online learning. The success of learning interventions – both whether people engage with them and whether they ultimately translate (i.e., “transfer”) into improved performance on the job—is highly context dependent. It is therefore critical to design the context, not just the technology, of online learning. In this chapter, Neaman examines a series of learning designs that represent an evolution in thinking, culminating in Directed Performance Support (DPS). Each successive design aims to further increase levels of learner engagement and knowledge transfer by further reducing the disparities between work and learning. However, DPS and solutions like it, that are more naturally integrated into people’s work, are unlikely to succeed on their own, unless they address organizational factors that affect use of new learning. Using a system dynamics framework, Marsick discusses organizational barriers and supports that must be considered in designing online learning for effective engagement and learning transfer.
