This was a great keynote by Kelsey Hightower at the LF open source summit a few weeks back. Two things came to mind: If all maintainers were as open minded about the community and forks, we'd have far less energy wasted in drama and duplication. If regulators / policy makers understood the intersection better between a maintainer creating something useful -for them- and commercial entities leveraging said capabilities, we'd save a lot of effort battling bad policy. Growing up, my mom would tell me to be proactive, not reactive (she still gets on my case about taking care of my teeth so I don’t get cavities— thanks mom). I’ve been thinking a lot about proactive vs reactive regarding security and compliance. This morning, I read an article by Eyal Estrin for Cloud Security Alliance about “Privacy by Design” (PbD). The first principle? Proactive not reactive; preventive not remedial. Great read, approach to security, and a principle we share at PensarAI.

Every foundational LLM out there (openai, gemini, anthropic, etc.) is yard sticking each other on "context window" length. "The bigger the better" they say, but that's not always the case -> There's an interesting phenomenon called the Context Window Paradox where once you reach a content window size, output accuracy of the system can actually go down. This looks like a great project from my friend Haig Douzdjian. I hope that once he finishes the overview he posts some more details about how he processes the implicit feedback (without giving away all the jewels, of course!). Human-in-the-loop feedback is a critical need for #LLM-based systems, but just like with traditional tabular #ML it's really hard to get enough feedback (aka labelled data). Building models on the side, to watch a conversation with an LLM and evaluate the success of each prompt interaction, seems like a great idea. I have to wonder how to cut through the noisiness of the #data well enough to make it valuable to the model. Hmmmmm!

Ok folks - I post rarely but I'd like to try and start a conversation in relationship to and in the wake of today's #CrowdStrike debacle. I read a quote on Hacker News[1] that summarized a feeling plaguing me lately in general: > All over the place I'm seeing checkbox compliance being prioritized above actual real risks from how the compliance is implemented. Orgs are doing this because they are more scared of failing an audit than they are of the consequences failure of the underlying systems the audits are supposed to be protecting. So we need to hold regulatory bodies accountable as well - when they frame regulation such that organizations are cornered into this they get to be part of the culpability here too. Combining that with the ever[2] present[3] amount of Okta hacks that seem to be on a six month rotating door I just can't help but think that... PERHAPS... all of those enterprise folks who insisted on these kind of security measures might have overstepped not just now but for quite some time. Not just that but - if the tea leaves are reading correctly - the "leak that shall not be named" is correct came from an insider engineer and would have been otherwise nearly unrestricted. As someone who contemplates "how" to solve a "human theft" problem on top of "digital content" issue constantly - I don't know if we will ever figure it out but the last two weeks have given me a lot more questions than answers.
