The Florida Department of Education recently released the 2023/24 FAST results, highlighting significant achievements for both the state and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Florida's latest 3rd and 8th-grade reading scores reflect progress toward The Florida Chamber of Commerce’s 2030-related education goals. According to TheFloridaScorecard.org, 3rd-grade reading scores increased by 5 percentage points to 55%, while 8th-grade reading scores rose by 4 percentage points to 51%. Additionally, Broward County Public Schools outperformed the state in English Language Arts across all grades, Mathematics for grades 3-5 and 7, and End of Course exams in Algebra, Biology, Civics, and U.S. History. Go Team 954! Broward County students' achievements are truly remarkable. To build on this success, expanding early childhood education programs and access to quality early learning is important. Initiatives like home library programs and family engagement can support literacy at home. This is how to move the needle. Why is 3rd-grade reading important to the business community? Improving 3rd-grade reading scores impacts post-secondary success and economic mobility, contributing to a stable and motivated workforce. Continued cooperation and collaboration will help create an environment where students, families, and businesses can succeed.
