What does it really mean to set climate action targets informed by best available science? This article provides a thought-provoking critique of current practices. I agree with much of what they say, but not all of it. Still it's a highly worthwhile read. I had the privilege to sit in conversation with Michael Stanley-Jones as part of the #GreenTruth Podcast series. The biggest and loudest lesson about the New York City congestion pricing battle and legal attacks against ESG finance shifts, in general, is that advocacy for it has been out-organized. Precarious progress quickly buckles under attacks from the high-carbon cartels and neoliberal Democrats. This is the general issue with the progressive environmental side here in the hyper-individualistic neoliberal captured US. We will continue to be out-organized until we shift to broader networked organizing of organizers and groups of groups across all levels of governance.

I've long respected Sightline's thought leadership on all things #planning, #climateadaptation and #resilience, and #equity, and appreciate their focus on this critical topic too. This will be an outcomes-based workforce fund designed to fill climate workforce gaps, increase access to economic mobility for workers, and support a diverse clean energy workforce. New report by LBNL on #climate-forcing emissions from plastic. This is really the first definitive study attributing emissions to the plastic chemical industry and it finds about 2.25 GtCO2/yr. This is roughly half of total emissions from the chemical industry and makes up close to 6% of total global emissions. https://lnkd.in/earjZUZY #plasticpollution

Three really good stories today on BusinessGreen about the CCC's annual progress report, which has ended up becoming an utterly damning post mortem on the climate policy efforts of the Conservative government's last year in office. I must admit to experiencing a genuine sense of sadness - and not a little anger - when editing them. There has been real progress over the past decade in accelerating decarbonisation efforts and there were even some positive moves over the past 12 months - the ZEV mandate, the increase in heat pump grants, the confirmation of the next Carbon Budget. But taken as whole, the past two years have been a massive wasted opportunity in terms of climate policy and green investment. The last government was just utterly complacent and chronically short termist in its approach to some of the most important political and policy questions out there. It's approach not only failed on its own terms, it ate up what little time there is to deliver on climate goals. We don't now get that time back. In search of a view that embraces intention, action, and dynamism, I’m inclined toward Bruno Latour’s geophilosophy. Latour’s Actor-Network Theory (ANT) underscores the agency of both human and non-human actors. It’s an approach that embraces the interplay between various entities—from legal bodies and industries to natural forces like wind and pollution—that shape our environmental reality. The recent Supreme Court decisions, viewed through history and Latour’s lens, reveal a complex network where power is constantly negotiated and redistributed.
