We just released our H1 2024 Digital Health funding summary. https://lnkd.in/gAZY64tp H1 2024 Digital Health funding closed at $12.4 billion invested across 719 deals. - Q2 2024 is outperforming Q1 by 34% ($7.1 billion vs. $5.3 billion)! - Digital Health funding has shown sustained investor confidence. Funding in Digital Health in North America is up 14% to $9.5 billion. Investment in Europe is down 10% to $1.52 billion, while funding in APAC dropped by 7% to $1.17 billion. - Partnerships in Digital Health are flat in the first half at 1,730. NVIDIA has been the strongest corporate partner in H1 2024 - 96 M&As, 8 bankruptcies, 5 delistings from the stock market and 3 relistings from NASDAQ to OTC market. "PitchBook’s report highlights future opportunities in mental health chatbots (but) long-term business plans for the companies remain unclear due to the lack of reimbursement for chatbots." Pitchbook reports are usually worth a read but this an odd statement. 😶 Chatbots provide a user interface and whilst regulators may have some concerns over AI-driven models I'm not sure payers/reimbursement systems are unduly bothered about UIs. Safety, efficacy and outcomes more so. 😕 Sounds like semantics? From a #GTM perspective, cutting edge innovation can face real issues when the regulatory pathway and road to revenue isn't clear. User acceptance can also be a real but more intangible issue. These are all real factors to consider in developing #GTMstrategy but concerns over a "lack of reimbursement for chatbots"?? Clumsy. 😐 Lack of reimbursement has been a real issue in the evolution of DTx and the majority of chatbots fronting #mentalhealth applications are likely to fall into this category (but national reimbursement schemes are becoming established suggesting a brighter future in the medium to long term). 🤔 AI-powered chatbots may provide a competitive advantage in a crowded market place dominated by CBT approaches but they have regulatory challenges at present... but for those willing to work through this and build a supporting evidence base, both unmet need and demand are (sadly) growing. 🙂 The upside for start-ups (and possibly concern for incumbent's) not reflected in this article is, according to Gallen Growth, the up tick in funding in digital mental health in the last quarter.

Scaling Quality Obesity Care. Enara Health is presenting at #ADA24 on Sunday, 6/23, at 12:30 PM. Poster 1074. #ADA24 has been filled with GLP-1 studies, but the the study we are presenting allows us to imagine how we can scale great care across the United States. We chose to submit this specific subset of data on patients with Type II diabetes and Obesity to show that behavioral, lifestyle, and traditional AOMs have a crucial place in the broader strategy to tackle obesity alongside GLP-1s. Only 12% of the AOM group in the pilot used GLP-1s, yet both AOM and non-AOM groups achieved 11% weight loss. This highlights the importance of a multifaceted approach to obesity treatment. The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) is an ideal barometric measure for assessing medication adherence among patients due to its reliability and consistency over time. Connect with me for more information and if you want to integrate this tool within your own EHR or digital platform for RPM, telehealth or DTx. Your patients deserve to know their adherence score and an opportunity to improve it over time. 1. Validity and Reliability: The MMAS-8 has been extensively validated in various patient populations and healthcare settings, demonstrating strong psychometric properties. Its reliability makes it a dependable tool for consistently measuring medication adherence among patients over time. Healthcare providers can trust the accuracy and consistency of MMAS-8 scores when assessing adherence levels. 2. Comprehensive Assessment: The MMAS-8 assesses multiple dimensions of medication adherence, including forgetfulness, carelessness, and intentional non-adherence. By capturing these various aspects of adherence behavior, the scale provides a comprehensive understanding of patients' medication-taking patterns. This comprehensive assessment enables healthcare providers to identify specific barriers to adherence and tailor interventions accordingly. 3. Easy Administration and Interpretation: The MMAS-8 is very easy to administer and interpret, making it practical for use in clinical practice. The scale consists of eight simple questions that patients can quickly respond to, minimizing burden on both patients and healthcare professionals. Scoring and interpreting MMAS-8 results are straightforward, allowing for efficient assessment of medication adherence during routine clinical visits. 4. Longitudinal Monitoring: Due to its reliability over time, the MMAS-8 can be used for longitudinal monitoring of medication adherence among patients with chronic conditions. By administering the scale at multiple time points, healthcare providers can track changes in adherence behavior, evaluate the effectiveness of adherence interventions, and identify trends or patterns that may require intervention adjustment. This longitudinal approach facilitates proactive management of adherence-related issues and supports continuity of care. 5. Predictive Value: Research has shown that MMAS-8 scores are predictive of various clinical outcomes, including treatment response, disease progression, and healthcare utilization. Patients with high MMAS-8 scores (indicating good adherence) are more likely to achieve therapeutic goals and experience positive health outcomes compared to those with low scores. By using the MMAS-8 as a barometric measure, healthcare providers can identify patients at risk of poor outcomes early on and intervene to improve adherence and prevent complications.

Digital health investors pulled back, but there are rays of hope... It's a similar story with startups across the gamut - things got a bit crazy there for a while, and discipline is ramping up - profitable growth is in. At MedCity News INVEST, Shawn Ellis put it well - much-needed practicality has been injected into the funding environment "Founders are paying more attention to unit economics, contribution margin, thinking critically about the milestones in their business and the KPIs they need to show all the way." Good news is that many investors want to be more than cash machines - Fatima Husain cites the Better Health example, where her healthcare connections helped the company achieve traction with major health systems. All this to say, rocky times are still ahead for #digitalhealth as things reset. But reasons to be optimistic and keep at the mission. #healthcare #innovation

Investing in companies that fill needs for health systems is a growth opportunity for both delivery organizations and start ups. Some systems are jumping in on their own, while others are partnering with like minded systems or with established VC firms. While this is a relatively new trend for systems, health plans have been making similar bets for many years. The benefits of becoming a health system portfolio company can be significant. Data, access to beta populations and real world coaching can be extremely beneficial. Start ups get mentoring and systems have to ability to leverage outside resources to solve relevant business problems. I predict a booming business!

Ply Health (YC S24) helps behavioral health providers get in network with insurance companies faster by using AI to automate and monitor submissions. Providers simply input their information into Ply once, and with a couple of clicks, can apply to join any of the ~1,400 US insurance company networks. The process to join each insurance company’s network is highly manual and fragmented. On top of that, forms that aren't filled out properly cause significant delays, which in turn costs practices tens of thousands of dollars of missed revenue. Ply’s platform solves for speed and accuracy of enrollment submissions using a combination of automation and an experienced ops team as humans-in-the-loop. Samantha Wu and David Zhang founded Ply Health because of Sam's first-hand experience with the contracting and credentialing process while running BizOps for health-tech startup Finni.
