Abstract: The Oceanus Procellarum region, characterized by its vast basaltic plains and pronounced volcanic activity, serves as a focal point for understanding the volcanic history of the Moon. Leveraging the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission data, we imaged the magmatic structures beneath the Oceanus Procellarum region. Our 3D density models uncover pronounced linear magmatic structures along the Procellarum's western border and significant intrusions within the northern and southern Marius Hills. Crucially, they reveal three narrow near-horizontal sheeted magmatic structures, 80-150 km long, extending from near-surface to 6- 7 km depth, which we identified as sill-like magmatic conduits. These magmatic conduits connect the Marius Hills' northern and southern intrusions and bridge them with the Procellarum's western border structures. These discoveries suggest that sill-like magmatic conduits likely serve as central pathways facilitating magma transport across various volcanic systems and furthermore indicate widespread magmatic connectivity beneath the Oceanus Procellarum. New National Science Foundation (NSF) grant targets large language models and generative AI The goal is to provide U.S. researchers with access to cutting-edge LLMs within a transparent experimental platform that reveals the systems’ internal computations. Dynamic DNA structures and formation of memory “DNA topology is much more dynamic than the static, right-hand double helix, as presumed by most researchers in the field,” said Professor Bredy. “There are actually more than 20 different DNA structure states identified to date, each potentially serving a different role in the regulation of gene expression.” The team found that G-quadraplex DNA (G4-DNA) accumulates in neurons and dynamically controls the activation and repression of genes underlying long-term memory formation. #innovation #medicine

In a development at the intersection of quantum mechanics and general relativity, researchers have made significant strides toward unraveling the mysteries of quantum gravity. This work sheds new light on future experiments that hold promise for resolving one of the most fundamental enigmas in modern physics: the reconciliation of Einstein's theory of gravity with the principles of quantum mechanics. The longstanding challenge of unifying these two pillars of physics has tantalized scientists for decades, spawning various theoretical frameworks such as string theory and loop quantum gravity. However, without experimental verification, these theories remain speculative. How to test the quantum nature of gravity? Tangible means to probe the quantum behavior of the gravitational field were proposed within the last decade, based on the concept of "gravity-mediated entanglement."

As Government Operations Agency Secretary Amy Tong emphasized during a state commission meeting, tech leaders must focus on a strategic approach to integrating generative artificial intelligence. Pilot projects are underway with Accenture, Deloitte Consulting, Ignyte Group, INRIX, and SymSoft Solutions involving cutting-edge technologies from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and other industry players to explore applications in healthcare inspections, traffic safety, business tax processes, and beyond. Inspiring work! My colleagues from MSR published in Nature a new foundational model to help fight cancer: GigaPath. When cancer is suspected, doctors analyze cells under a microscope, producing large images, around 120,000 pixels. Standard Transformers handle a few hundred tokens, but cancer images require about 56 million tokens. The proposed solution is a Vision Transformer with dilated attention. Unlike dense attention, which inputs all image patches, dilated attention skips patches at intervals, such as taking 1 out of every 2 or 4 patches. This sparse approach allows the model to handle gigapixel images effectively. AIMI affiliate faculty member Kevin Schulman and colleagues have received a grant from National Science Foundation (NSF) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot. This exciting grant provides access to advanced computing resources, which will support Schulman and team's goal to develop computer vision models that can collect and analyze comprehensive video data from ICU patient rooms to help doctors and nurses better track patients' health. "The ultimate goal is to develop bias-free algorithms and propose interventions to ensure fair and accurate patient monitoring and care in ICUs," Schulman explains. We're excited to see this project that promotes ethical use of AI in healthcare receive support at the national level!
