What do you do if your system administration work lacks innovation due to a lack of automation?
The sign of a true engineer is being excited by the prospect of technology, automation and making things work. As a System Administrator, once you open up your eyes to the world of scripting, automation, parsing and reliable workflows you start to seek out how to do these things. What I am trying to say is that before jumping in to learn various automation tools and frameworks you should acquaint yourself with what is possible. Then depending on your work, seek to automate the most menial tasks - even if the automation takes longer that it would take you to that task 10 times over. It's fun, it's for the long run, and you learn something new every day!

What do you do if you encounter challenging users while providing technical support?
Clear communication is of the upmost value here. For the most part, difficult customers are like that because they are facing issues that are making their day challenging. So by clearly communicating your understanding, sympathy, and as much as possible a clear path towards a solution. The calmer the customer will get. Clear communication boils down to a couple of things: - Clearly understanding their issue and what is happening. - Clearly understanding how this affects them personally - Giving a clear path forward - And wrapping up with a crisp root cause analysis or a summary of what happened and how it was solved.

What do you do if your remote team members in system administration need feedback?
Personal feedback, even delivered virtually, can be of upmost importance to up and coming System Administrators. Not only would you be able to be the most direct, but more importantly you can answer any unknowns they may have then and there. At the same time avoiding any potential communication issues. You should also look to document the feedback, and provide it to them so they could reflect on it and followup once the time is right!
