5 myths that might be stopping you from saving $ Myth 1: When your hardware warranty is up, it’s always best to upgrade. Truth: You can easily get hardware maintenance from a third party supplier that’s usually a fraction of the cost. Myth 2: You should always upgrade when your lease expires because the hardware is old and will falter Truth: The useful life cycle of hardware can be 5-7 years if serviced and maintained correctly. Myth 3: Only the manufacturer can apply future updates Truth: Any third-party supplier can apply updates to your systems. Myth 4; Spares supplied by third-party companies are not ‘vendor approved.’ Truth: They are the exact same product supplied by the vendor to the third party. Myth 5: A vendor's warranty is 24×7 support with a 4-hour onsite response Truth: The first response is always by phone to diagnose the issue and decide on the criticality of the call. Ransomware is wiping out all the data for smaller companies in particular. Here is how you can prevent the bad guys from taking your firm down.

Just four days after AT&T shared that hackers had accessed records of calls and texts for nearly all its 100M+ customers, another Fortune 50 seems to have become the subject of a major data leak. A hacktivist group named Nullbulge shared in a blog post that they have stolen over 1TB of data (stretching back to at least 2019) from 10,000 internal Slack channels of The Walt Disney Company. This includes application code, details on unreleased projects, assessments of candidates, photos of employees' dogs, certain login details, and API keys. If true, this exposed data could be used by future threat actors to launch attacks using this compromised data. It seems the group worked with an insider at the company to gain access to this data using a videogame add-on. Disney hasn't yet confirmed the breach but is investigating. This is another reminder that the insider threat persists and we need to improve #DLP capabilities to reduce risk. There is also an opportunity for better #collaboration security (across all communication channels from Slack to email), secrets management, and identity management (employing zero trust and just-in-time). Don't let this one thing keep your startup from selling to large companies. I see it all the time. Tech startups scrambling to get their cyber security program straightened out so that they can close a deal with a deep pocketed client. If you want big companies to trust you with their data, you are going to need to show them you are serious about cyber security. They will want to perform a Cyber Due Diligence. Frequently, this looks like a questionnaire that you will need to fill out. Besides backups and MFA, one of the most important questions on that survey is: Has your SaaS/Product had a penetration test? A penetration test is a test by cyber security professionals (also called pentesters) that digs deep into the application using hacker techniques to find hidden vulnerabilities. In the hands of the wrong people, these vulnerabilities can cause a LOT of unnecessary headache. Let's not let that happen. Here is the catch. The last quarter of the year tends to be SUPER busy for companies that do penetration testing. This may come as a shock, but a lot of companies wait until the last minute to get their yearly test completed. Want to be prepared when your game changing client asks for a penetration test? Cybersecurity vendors raised $740 MILLION over 25 rounds in July. Some comparative data below. -The $740 Million raised in July 2024 represents a 48% increase in funding raised when compared to July 2023. -25 funding rounds were tracked in July '24 compared to 21 in July, '23. -Early-stage funding (Seed, Series-A) represents 68% of all July 2024 funding rounds recorded. -YTD vendors raised $6.4 Billion, a 20% increase over the same period in 2023.

With breaches happening left and right, protecting your company's data is critical. I know tech stuff can make your eyes glaze over, but stay with me. Think of cybersecurity like getting a flu shot - it's your first line of defense against the "cyber flu." A strong firewall, updated software, and employee training are vaccines to keep your files from getting "sick." Just like washing your hands stops the spread of real germs, safe browsing and strong passwords stop virtual bugs from infecting your network. I get it - who has time for all this techy stuff? But a cyberattack could cost your business big time. So put cybersecurity on your to-do list before you end up with a nasty case of ransomware. The good news is there are affordable options to boost your protection. Invest what you can - your company's health is worth it.

This is the most common Access Control mistake I see with startups: Ultra-Over-Provisioning. (I refer to this as UOP) Aka. Giving admin to every user. Not only is this insecure - allowing anyone to make or delete any resource - UOP also creates a massive headache for the team/employee who eventually needs to go back through and organize users into role-based groups. It’s negligent and a waste of resources (time + money). Stephen Covey talks about “Starting with the End in Mind” in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. That habit should be applied here too. Think about where your company is at, how you plan to grow it, and have your tech guy(s) built out the access controls ahead of time. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is a low-lift when done up front and prevents so much frustration + unnecessary risk.

Imagine your team is experiencing gridlock about its direction: Your company has a tech product and – Your InfoSec team is pushing for enhanced security features – Sales is demanding new customization options – Product is eager to build integrations with other software A typical corporate "traffic jam." When leaders don't fully understand or align on the payoffs for each initiative, decision-making grinds to a halt. The result? A frustrating environment of false-starts, politics, and delayed progress. Unresolved, competing priorities are the primary source of gridlock in a company. So, how do we break free from this gridlock? 1// Prioritize Real-Time Collaboration to identify options Ensure your leadership team engages in thorough, real-time discussions to debate and align on the problems facing your business and the best way forward. Not on email or Slack. 2// Define criteria for success As a leader, your role is to define the criteria for problem-solving, involving a comprehensive evaluation of options. How will you quantify success for an initiative and in what time frame? Your leadership team will be more likely to align on a priority when they have: – Fully advocated for and defended their preferred priority  – Critiqued and understood the preferred priority of their peers helped others do the same Only when your team surfaces and clears potential roadblocks can they focus on pushing the business forward. By comparison, a few hours of robust debate don't mean much when the time invested results in faster completion of priority initiatives.

Your PSA for the day: Oh look #Bitcoin is still running despite CrowdStrike affecting Microsoft breaking everything - from corporation to electrical to airline to financial outages. Ya'll keep saying that decentralization isn't the way to go - then you prove yourselves wrong - time and time again. Decentralization is the way - Consensus and Freedom to Transact are the future.
