🖤 💚 💜 ❤️ 💙 💛 I usually don't post about anything political on LinkedIn but for me this is less about "politics" and more about why you often will see me post about the importance of my Squad and Sisterhood. And how quite frankly, without it, I would not be able to make it through this thing we call work-life. Vice President Kamala Harris gave a moving and needed speech yesterday at the Boule (conference) of my beloved Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Official. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Madame VP Harris, she showed up as originally planned despite what I can only imagine has been a hectic schedule since her candidacy was announced. She, as all members of the Divine Nine organizations - the (9) historically Black Greek letter organizations say, "We understood the assignment." Let me be clear, we all do because we learned to! We needed to because we had no choice. In other words, we show up. We speak up. We support one another regardless of in the same organization or not. We want each other to win because it is a win for all of us. You don't have to be a D9 member to understand that or to practice it. You just have to understand that your privilege (if you have it) should be used for good meaning not everyone need look like you or act like you to "fit in." You have to be open to share what you have learned by being a mentor. You have to be a champion and voice for others that do not have one. Speak up about people in the rooms that they have no access to; at least, not yet. I am fortunate to have much of my network show up and speak up for me. You know who you are! But more people need to step up for others. It's not that hard. Come on, folks! Let's use this current climate as an example of how more than ever we need to bring others up and along. All these underscore the disconnect between employers and students when recruiting at HBCUs. Employers report struggling with low engagement or engagement that doesn’t translate into applications, while students and HBCU staff report ineffective engagement strategies from employers. (Skilled Through Alternative Routes) That’s more than 70 million workers who don’t have a college degree. → 62% of Black workers are STARs → 54% of Hispanic workers are STARs → 66% of Rural workers are STARs → 61% of Veteran workers are STARs STARS may not have a college degree. They may have learned on the job or through certificate programs and internships. They have competencies and capabilities which can be easily be revealed with science-based tools, like MyInnerGenius. I wanna talk about Black art real quick, specifically Black filmmaking... I finished watching Season 1 of Them and had to pause several times to mentally prepare or recover from the physically, emotionally and mentally violent scenes... And yet, I am ALWAYS a proponent of all Black art and stories being told and made - and a wide variety of them. Black tragedies, Black science fiction, Black superheroism, Black drama, Black joy. That said, I saw interesting reflections and reviews of Them. 👉🏾 Some were Black folks saying they are understandably tired of Black trauma and our experiences being exploited for money and "art sake." And also offended by the "mental fragility" shown after the characters were terrorized. I found this interesting because if you watch the series, anyone staying mentally sound after all that... would be pretty improbable in my opinion. 👉🏾 Some were White folks discombobulated by why anyone would choose to display such sickening violence on television. What I find more interesting is the lack of discombobulation after knowing that every bit of violence shown was based on actual history of White on Black terrorism. Anyways, after reading or watching a couple interviews from directors of these films, a couple stood out: 👉🏾 Cord Jefferson, director of American Fiction, essentially said he doesn't care what conversations people had after his movie...just that we have them. He said we are so polarized and scared to discuss these topics that he simply wants us to have a conversation. 👉🏾 Little Marvin, director of Them, conveyed that his goal was never to be provocative. He sees his and other artists' responsibility as honoring the past of those that came before, the ones who cleared pathways for the next generation. The Power of Influence and Perception Last night, I watched the debate (this is not a political post or debate) and heard the term "black jobs" mentioned. I’m unsure what it specifically means, but it highlights how influential platforms can shape our perceptions of people and things. This is how biases are formed. As a Black woman, my interpretation may be different from yours. In fact, I know it is because we lead different lives, from demographic to economic to educational backgrounds. Are black jobs seen as inferior to white jobs? Is this a matter of racial division? When people hear these terms, they form their own perspectives based on what they see and hear. It's crucial to be aware of how language and influence can shape societal views and contribute to bias. Let's strive to use our words thoughtfully and work towards fostering understanding and unity. #Perception #Influence #Inclusion #tammiashares

Recently, SHRM removed “Equity” from their DEI statement. This generated a lot of buzz, both negative and positive. There were arguments in comment threads. Many people threatening to cancel their memberships. Others dismissing genuine concerns. I immediately took away two things from this: — I'm grateful that we can have these conversations out in the open — No system is perfect, but for every given problem, there is a solution There’s no cheat code for how to conduct difficult discussions. But some ways are better than others. 👎 Ineffective ways: —Politicizing issues instead of infusing more humanity into them —Leaving little room for your mind to be changed —Writing off anyone with a differing opinion 😃 Effective ways (that will get you closer to a solution): —Conducting a discourse with thoughtfulness and generosity > self-righteousness —Recognizing that everyone has differing needs —Deprioritizing being “right” You will inevitably hear these topics arise in the workplace.
