Perseverance: continuing to achieve something even when proven difficult or it takes longer than expected (Oxford Dictionary). I thought I would be showing and teaching this lesson throughout classes. Turns out we would be teaching each other how to keep pushing through, how to keep showing up, how to use all your resources, and most importantly don’t give up on yourself. Thoughtful article by Chicago's Alderman Desmon Yancy a few days ago articulating the growing frustration of Black Chicago residents. This sentiment is also reflected nationwide as Black America is trying to grapple with the challenges that are plaguing our communities. With public safety, health, and housing challenges, our communities are seemingly confused with how resources are allocated and not feeling relevant only during election years. It is hard to believe that in 2024, Black Chicago is facing enormous challenges with food and healthcare deserts, chronic affordable housing shortages, and public health issues where your zip code determines your life expectancy. This is why I advocate for Black political leaders to develop a "Go To 2020 for Black Chicago". We know all of this cannot rest on a new Mayor and fresh City Council. However, I believe making strategic investments in addressing these chronic issues with visible and tangible projects and resources that Black Chicago will immediately feel and recognize. These immediate and consistent investments in housing, reversing the blight on commercial corridors, and reducing food and pharmacy deserts will give the results and impact that Black Chicago residents will support.

From Insight Into Diversity: Historically Black #Colleges and #Universities (#HBCUs) are experiencing a period of expansion, with new programs and campuses being developed across the country as the number of applicants has increased for the second and third straight years. Morgan State University, for example, has reported a record number of new students, while North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Howard University, Wilberforce University, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, among others, have also seen surging enrollment. This growth reflects an increasing demand for higher education tailored to the Black community, amplified recruitment and retention efforts, innovative strategies to serve these student populations, and an increase in funding through federal and philanthropic avenues. The Supreme Court’s decision last June to discontinue the consideration of race in college admissions may also be contributing to this influx. To accommodate this increase in student population and their needs, some HBCUs are also expanding their offerings. One prominent example is at Xavier University of Louisiana, which recently signed a partnership with Ochsner Medical Center to establish the first #HBCU medical school in the Gulf South, Xavier Ochsner School of Medicine (EXOCOM). Their next step is to seek accreditation. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it aims to address the underrepresentation of Black professionals in the medical field by enrolling and graduating more Black doctors and health care providers. Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is also making meaningful strides by offering $52 million to procure the now-defunct Birmingham-Southern College property for use as a satellite campus. If accepted, this would expand Alabama A&M’s footprint in the state and create new opportunities for students in Birmingham, enhancing educational accessibility and fostering community development. The acquisition would also be historic, as no HBCU has ever purchased a predominantly White institution in the South. These expansions are not just about increasing enrollment but also about extending the reach and impact of HBCUs. By creating satellite campuses and new schools, these institutions are addressing the evolving educational needs of #diverse communities, ensuring their long-term viability and relevance in the higher education landscape. #EducationalEquity #RacialEquity #DEI #BlackStudents #BlackDoctors #CollegeAdmissions #EnrollmentManagement

My work serving on boards has provided me with invaluable professional and personal insights. This documentary highlights some of the challenges being faced by Black women seeking these same opportunities. "The journey of Black women striving for equal footing in corporate leadership, especially within corporate boardrooms, has been a saga of resilience amidst systemic hurdles. Championing fair policies, bolstering childcare support, and acknowledging the distinct challenges faced by Black working mothers are imperative steps toward cultivating an inclusivity. Only through multiple tactics can tomorrow's boardrooms truly reflect our society's diversity and multifaceted talent pool."

Preserving Black cultural heritage and spaces is a compelling project of recovering an inheritance of perseverance and creativity. By locating, maintaining, and sharing the stories of Black families and communities, we rediscover the meaning of kinship, social justice, and political innovation. In the face of a history of racism and prejudice that has undermined Black intergenerational wealth, could Black cultural heritage provide a way for us to also recognize and value Black intergenerational worth?

🏙️ Detroit's challenge with student attendance is more than just a local issue—it's a complex problem tangled in socio-economic, health, and systemic barriers. As a experienced non-profit professional committed to leadership, I've seen how these challenges resonate in communities across the nation. 📉 More than 50% of Detroit residents live below the poverty line, creating a landscape where students face unstable housing, limited transportation, and health issues—factors severely impacting school attendance. A recent study by Wayne State University reveals daunting challenges faced by Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD): - Over 10% of students have experienced homelessness. - 10,000+ students live more than a mile from their assigned school, beyond the threshold for transportation eligibility. - High rates of asthma, lead exposure, and mental health issues further obstruct regular attendance. The implications of these findings go beyond attendance numbers; they spotlight deeper societal issues like community violence and economic hardship, affecting student engagement and wellness. 💡 What initiatives have you seen that effectively address such challenges in education? 🚀 How can we replicate effective solutions to foster engaging, supportive school environments? I'm honored to have been interviewed in Lean In's Leadership Fundamentals for Black Women series. https://buff.ly/4eaojpc While Juneteenth celebrates some of progress made in this country, we still have a ways to go. Black women still earn 63.7 cents for every dollar earned by White men. A McKinsey study shows a significant decline in promotions rates for Black women in the last couple years; we are promoted at only half the rate as all men. We still need to advocate for ourselves when it comes to promotions and raises. Check out the "How to get the recognition you deserve at work" segment below for powerful tips as we continue to navigate these challenges.
