Join colleagues across the United States working to reduce barriers to clinicians seeking mental health care. One meaningful and achievable action is to remove job and credentialing application-related barriers to clinicians seeking mental health care. Most health care organizations ask clinical applicants — including nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, podiatrists, and pharmacists — if they have or have had a mental health diagnosis or have ever sought mental health care even if having that diagnosis has not in any way affected their ability to do their job. When organizations remove these questions from their job and credentialing applications it helps clinicians overcome this common barrier to receiving care. Use the tools developed by and for clinicians as part of the IHI Leadership Alliance Helping Healthcare Heal Coalition to educate peers, professional society members, medical boards, and health care institutions about these issues. The Coalition’s publicly available resources include a sample email to send to your medical staff office or credentialing committee recommending this change. A new AAP report shares updated information on how pediatricians can help prevent child abuse and neglect. Check it out here! 🩺 "Child abuse and neglect, also known as maltreatment, can stem from family stress, economic pressure, substance use or a variety of other factors. But like other health risks, it can be prevented, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The AAP has updated a clinical report outlining ways pediatricians can reduce child maltreatment. Efforts to reduce child maltreatment include offering anticipatory guidance to families and caregivers, identifying family stressors, and providing evidence-based interventions to reduce child maltreatment. Do you know what to do if your care recipient experiences shortness of breath? 🌬️ They might feel short of breath when rushing through activities or pushing themselves too hard. This could even lead to feelings of panic. Help them use this guide to catch their breath again. STEP 1: Get away from environment triggers (if any). For example, smoke. STEP 2: Calmly stop what you are doing. STEP 3: Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Relax your neck, shoulders, and chin. STEP 4: Breathe as fast as you need to. Try not to gasp for air. STEP 5: Breathe in through your mouth if you have to. STEP 6: Breathe out slowly through pursed lips (if you can). STEP 7: Try to exhale longer each time. Don't force it. STEP 8: Slowly breathe in through your nose. Breathe out through pursed lips. STEP 9: Aim to breathe out for twice as long as you are breathing in. Do this until your breathing slows. STEP 10: When breathing feels more comfortable, rest for 5 minutes before resuming activity. Try to pace yourself. Although shortness of breath with effortful activity can be scary, it's not dangerous or harmful. Don't avoid doing activities that cause shortness of breath. Instead, pace yourself and learn what to do so you don't panic. Practice the steps when you're not short of breath to feel prepared for when it happens. Save this post for when you might need it!
