Being a proud Dominican woman has always been a significant part of my identity. I have consistently aimed to set a positive example of the excellent civic and social education that Dominican children receive from a young age through adulthood. The values instilled in me during my upbringing have molded me into a resilient and compassionate individual. However, recently, it has been challenging to show unwavering support for my homeland. As a woman, it is disheartening to witness the continued lack of autonomy over our bodies, which can significantly impact our futures. Morality serves as a guiding principle to differentiate between right and wrong, nurturing a sense of unity within communities. But morality cannot be a weapon we use to denied basic medical services to those in need. Instead, it should be the compass guiding us toward compassion, empathy, and the unwavering commitment to the well-being of every individual. A highly concerning bill for a new Criminal Code is nearing final approval in the Dominican Republic's Senate. The bill, which the Senate approved on first review on June 26, maintains the country's complete ban on abortion. It also reduces penalties for sexual violence within marriage, classified as ‘non-consensual sexual activity”. Abortion in the Dominican Republic is illegal in all circumstances, including rape and incest. Abortions are not allowed to save a woman’s life or when the fetus can’t survive outside the womb. The law has been in effect since 1884 and women can be sentenced to up to two years in prison for undergoing an abortion, while doctors or midwives could face penalties ranging from five to 20 years.

"It Takes A Village" means everything to me, more than words can express. When I founded my non-profit, ITAVFoundation, my mission was to carry a piece of Jamaica, my home country, with me wherever I went. A Village, a place where no matter what the circumstances, support was there for you. As an immigrant, I've experienced firsthand the feeling of uncertainty when seeking help. And as a Black woman, I've encountered disparities that cut deep, even in unexpected places. Then came motherhood, a journey that brought its own set of trials. Prior to motherhood, I advocated for maternal health and wellness, supporting mothers and families as a birth worker and childcare provider. But when my own turn came, I faced head-on the healthcare disparities that plague immigrant and Black women. Fortunately, I had the knowledge and resources to advocate for myself, seek second opinions, and access support when needed. However, many individuals aren't as fortunate. That's why Maternal Support and Education isn't just a cause, it's deeply personal to me. There's a wealth of knowledge our community lacks, not just about maternal health and wellness, but about their bodies in general. To Whom It May Concern, Being a senior ambassador scholar at Fort Valley State University majoring in Social Work and receiving the White House HBCU Initiative Scholar title gives me a great responsibility and chance to bring about significant change both inside and outside of my HBCU. Being a White House HBCU Initiative Scholar first represents a dedication to leadership, service, and advocacy rather than only academic success. This esteemed title enables me to show my colleagues that brilliance has no boundaries when driven by tenacity and will, therefore acting as a lighthouse of inspiration and hope. As a White House Scholar, I hope to use the tools and platform this program offers to solve important social concerns impacting underprivileged areas. As my chosen field of study, social work gives me the tools I need to advocate for social justice, advance equity, and improve the well-being of people and families overcoming hardship. In particular, I intend to play this role starting and helping initiatives emphasizing mental health awareness, community empowerment, and educational justice. These areas are essential for creating a more inclusive society in which every person has chances to flourish independent of their background or situation. Moreover, am dedicated to working with nearby companies, legislators, and colleague academics to create environmentally friendly solutions that remove structural obstacles and advance general growth. Through encouraging alliances and open communication, I hope to bring about long-lasting transformation going beyond my academic career. As a senior ambassador scholar, I also see my chance to encourage and teach next generations of students-especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. By means of mentoring programs and outreach campaigns, I hope to motivate young brains to follow their aspirations and acknowledge their capacity to bring about constructive change in their local environments. Ultimately, being a White House HBCU Initiative Scholar and senior ambassador scholar at Fort Valley State University majoring in Social Work calls to action rather than just a label or praise. As I work to significantly influence the life of others and help to create a more fair and equal society, it is a privilege and a responsibility I completely welcome.

From Insight Into Diversity: Historically Black #Colleges and #Universities (#HBCUs) are experiencing a period of expansion, with new programs and campuses being developed across the country as the number of applicants has increased for the second and third straight years. Morgan State University, for example, has reported a record number of new students, while North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Howard University, Wilberforce University, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, among others, have also seen surging enrollment. This growth reflects an increasing demand for higher education tailored to the Black community, amplified recruitment and retention efforts, innovative strategies to serve these student populations, and an increase in funding through federal and philanthropic avenues. The Supreme Court’s decision last June to discontinue the consideration of race in college admissions may also be contributing to this influx. To accommodate this increase in student population and their needs, some HBCUs are also expanding their offerings. One prominent example is at Xavier University of Louisiana, which recently signed a partnership with Ochsner Medical Center to establish the first #HBCU medical school in the Gulf South, Xavier Ochsner School of Medicine (EXOCOM). Their next step is to seek accreditation. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it aims to address the underrepresentation of Black professionals in the medical field by enrolling and graduating more Black doctors and health care providers. Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is also making meaningful strides by offering $52 million to procure the now-defunct Birmingham-Southern College property for use as a satellite campus. If accepted, this would expand Alabama A&M’s footprint in the state and create new opportunities for students in Birmingham, enhancing educational accessibility and fostering community development. The acquisition would also be historic, as no HBCU has ever purchased a predominantly White institution in the South. These expansions are not just about increasing enrollment but also about extending the reach and impact of HBCUs. By creating satellite campuses and new schools, these institutions are addressing the evolving educational needs of #diverse communities, ensuring their long-term viability and relevance in the higher education landscape. #EducationalEquity #RacialEquity #DEI #BlackStudents #BlackDoctors #CollegeAdmissions #EnrollmentManagement

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are based on the United Nations criteria for the Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. The 2024 rankings include 2,152 universities from 125 countries and are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals across the areas of research, outreach and stewardship. Some of the work that contributed to FIU’s ranking includes preservation of ocean health, protecting and restoring populations of endangered species, and delivering clean water and sanitation to remote communities.
