They aren’t often grouped together, but the latest data in the new Variety report “Social Video vs. SVOD: The Race to Replace TV” suggests they can be thought of as a series of historical shifts in U.S. audience viewing behavior. First, the cable business broke broadcast TV’s stranglehold in the 1980s. Thirty years later, Netflix led a field of successor streaming services that siphoned eyeballs at equally sizable scale from linear TV. And now even though streaming is hardly done in terms of its growth relative to broadcast and cable, there are signs of a paradigm shift already in motion: a third wave of fragmentation in which social video begins to eat into the market share of major streaming services. Data keeps mounting that video consumption on the big social platforms — primarily YouTube, TikTok and Instagram — is growing strongly, with users spending more time on these platforms each year. These publishers will attract new demand and more scale for Seedtag’s contextual ad products. Seedtag entered the US market in 2022. But it wasn’t until earlier this year that it launched its first CTV-focused contextual ad product that allows advertisers to apply contextual targeting signals to their streaming buys. More advertisers are now looking for addressable alternatives in light of signal loss and privacy concerns, which, in turn, is driving more interest in streaming ad products. Hence Seedtag’s decision to buy rather than build in order to capture that growing demand. ✅🖥️ Marketplace.org (7/8): “Paramount’s not alone, in the sense that they’re trying to become profitable in the wake of having all of these assets that are not as valuable as they once were,” said media consultant Brad Adgate. It’s not just the decline of broadcast television. It’s the challenge of creating a streaming platform that’s profitable. “It really comes down to content. I mean, I think the biggest challenge that subscriber companies have, like a Paramount+, or Disney+, is not getting subscribers, as much as it is keeping subscribers.” Whether Skydance CEO David Ellison, whose father founded Oracle, can turn things around for Paramount is a wait and see situation. University of Minnesota’s Joel Waldfogel is particularly skeptical about the streaming business. “It’s hard to understand how the bringing tech fairy dust in here fundamentally makes it sufficiently attractive relative to the other streaming services that it’s going to attract a lot of interest,” he said. Subscribers only really want to subscribe to maybe three different streaming services. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video take the top two spots. ✅⬇️ AdExchanger (5/24): “To some degree, the digitization of TV marketing is inevitable. Wall Street investors prefer advertising and media companies with the most promising long-term profitability. One way to get there is for streaming companies to access shopper data and strike partnerships with retailers to court advertisers with the promise of performance and attribution. Publishers want to relabel connected TV as a performance channel, (an analyst) said. But if that happens, she continued, “CTV will lose its cred” among buyers and brands as a viable replacement for legacy linear commercials. Say what you will about linear, but it’s a mass reach vehicle. And if CTV doesn’t provide the same reach opportunity, Wall Street may cool on public companies with a CTV advertising business, (the analyst) said. The reality is, upper-funnel channels, like streaming, have a strong downstream impact on outcomes even if they don’t directly drive a purchase. For example, CTV’s ability to drive mass reach and brand awareness is why more retail media spend is moving to streaming, said Max Willens, a senior analyst at eMarketer, also speaking at Programmatic I/O this week. Absent from the story about the rise of the WNBA is the most obvious contributor: Sports betting. A recent Wall Street Journal profile highlighted the growing shift in the WNBAs emerging viewership: more young male fans tuning in than ever before. And while in part this is due to recent stars like Caitlin Clark, there is a more obvious influence at play: a window in the sports betting calendar where fans have nothing to bet on but baseball. My hunch is that people tuning in has as much to do with new stars as new stars to bet on. And that’s ok! I’m just surprised why the narrative has left out such an obvious part of the WNBA viewership journey. But it reminds me that brands betting on sports are quite literally betting on people betting on sports. While this will have no ramifications in the short term, there will be a long term trend of sports viewership and betting exploding together, and brands implicitly bankrolling millions of Americans addiction to sports gambling. This will come to a head in 3-5 years. More stories of addiction will seep into culture. Bipartisan legislation will put an eye on this sector of the industry. Brands who flocked to sports for brand safety will start escaping it in the name of it. But until then, we celebrate the other side of the coin: emerging sports who are finally getting their due and recognition, and brands stepping up to the plate to fund overlooked sports properties that need it most. ✅🖥️ New York Times (7/11): “On Thursday, Hallmark said it would introduce a stand-alone streaming service. It will be called Hallmark+ and arrive in September for $8 a month. As part of the push, Hallmark is expanding into holiday-themed mini-series and reality competition shows, including one called “Finding Mr. Christmas.” (In a racy episode, at least by Hallmark standards, the “Hallmark Hunks” strip off their Christmas sweaters, albeit briefly.) Hallmark+ subscribers will have on-demand access to old content; almost 300 Hallmark Christmas films have aired since 2002. The ad-free service will also offer exclusive new programming — shows like “The Chicken Sisters,” adapted from the best-selling book and described by Hallmark as “a family drama dipped in Southern charm and served up with a saucy side of romance.” Hallmark+ membership will also come with a range of perks, including monthly $5 coupons for Hallmark Gold Crown stores, free greeting cards, exclusive access to Hallmark’s growing roster of live experiences (themed cruises, star meet-and-greets) and free “surprise” gifts (an exclusive Christmas ornament, for instance). Other old-line media companies made the leap from traditional television to streaming starting in 2019. The glow has since come off much of the streaming business, with some struggling services looking to merge as they try to contain costs and reduce churn, the entertainment industry’s term for the percentage of subscribers who cancel monthly. If anything, consumers — reeling from inflation — are cutting back on the number of streaming subscriptions they maintain, analysts say. But the situation with traditional cable is much worse. It may not be zero sum (most studies suggest that consumers will pay for about four streaming services at a time), but it is mighty close to it. And with Netflix holding a secure lock on one of those subscriptions for most consumers, there is increasingly little room for error. But the streaming wars between giant services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney, Max, Peacock, Paramount+ and others also obscure an entire ecosystem of streaming offerings that are trying to carve out their own niches in an increasingly difficult environment. For all the press that the big streaming platforms get, there is a surprisingly vibrant world of boutique and specialty streamers chasing loyal and engaged fans at a much smaller scale. And new players continue to enter the space. In the world of comedy, there is Dropout, born out of the comedy website College Humor. And BuzzFeed veterans-turned YouTubers The Try Guys and Watcher have launched dedicated subscription streaming offerings of their own in recent weeks in an effort to more effectively monetize the sometimes fleeting audience that YouTube or social platforms deliver.
