Brit Morin, Jessica E. Lessin, Sam Lessin and Dave Morin had a really interesting conversation on a podcast this week about media businesses, the tribulations of the The Washington Post and how it's losing piles of money and subs. The discussion dipped into something Chris Anderson coined 20 years ago, perhaps before their time, called "long tail" content. Essentially his thesis called on creators to hyper-focus only on their niche, becoming the expert in hacking heat pumps or the best practices of dog grooming. Now, I'm one of those always looking to appeal to the broadest audience possible so naturally I've pushed against this framework, considering it too limiting. Then I met and worked under Robert Allbritton at POLITICO, where in spite of many in the company not on board with the philosophy, he talked about starting the company to deliver value to a sliver of the audience: those most powerful in the halls of government and soup of politics (and charge significant money for it). Needless to say it was a winning approach, because it's unlikely Axel Springer paid a billion dollars a few years ago for the ad-supported general news side of the house - as terrific as that content is. It was the subscription "Pro" product that overdelivered to that wonky sliver. And while the chatters on the pod did not say so, a similar strategy could well work for the Post: Turn 80% of the operation toward finding a little white space in the "political and policy makers" space, and become an absolute authority there ... and then, of course, license all that to the LLMs ;-) (But that's a story for another post.)

I chatted with Shahar Silbershatz, CEO of reputation management and analytics firm Caliber, for the latest #DoneandDoner podcast. It was a fascinating conversation about the impact of executive brands on company reputation and business. That was the just the main course; the 30 minutes were crammed with useful and actionable info across a number of topics that should be of great interest to comms pros. We discussed: - Comparisonn of brand measurement methods. - The emergence of always on, real-time surveys and panels. - Connection between CEO and company reputation. - How to convert data into PR results. - The decline of the tech industry and CEO brands, and what to do about it. - How to be an effective and visible thought leader in today's hyper-polarized, perilous world. Shahar shared interesting case studies, especially around a PR campaign regarding Elon Musk's reputation and Tesla's business performance that got covered in Reuters, CNN and others. He also dished on survey data about the reputations of tech CEOs, answering: - Which ones are most recognized and liked/disliked? - The two tech leaders who are most often associated with their respective companies. - Which tech leaders are liked more than their companies and vice versa? 🚨 Beware *shiny object* syndrome in media relations 🌟 In tech PR, we *always* celebrate a big client “hit” in TechCrunch. 🕺 Ditto coverage in powerhouses like the WSJ & NYT & HBR. That never fails to thrill! 🤩 But the truth is, the media relations game usually *isn’t won or lost* with these heavy hitters. It’s not. These are spikes 📈 They’re peaks in the PR pro’s never-ending quest to *eliminate valleys* 📉 I won’t bullshit you: Coverage in these top outlets are both precious & rare — and that’s why they’re so highly coveted. But in between these spikes in huge coverage wins is the *aggregate* body of work of media relations. This is where the true PR pros earn their stripes without much fanfare. I’m talking about *grinding it out* for clients in: *Trade publications *Contributed articles *Podcast appearances *Newsletters & Slack channels *Across a variety of social channels *On LinkedIn in particular They say slow and steady wins the race. 🐢 I disagree. Fast and steady wins the race in tech PR. 🐇 Celebrate the huge wins with your public relations team. For sure! But never look down your nose at the day-to-day victories that power a *consistently productive* PR program. That’s where your bread is really buttered.
