🇺🇸 The U.S. Federal departments and offices have just released the "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles”. We at International Carbon Registry celebrate more clarity on the direction of this important market and its role in the climate crisis. Notable developments include: • The emergence of multi-stakeholder initiatives that have set out standards and principles for high-integrity credit development and responsible credit use; • Improvements to key crediting methodologies, their guiding standards, and tracking systems; • New and improved analytical products and services that aim to strengthen credit transparency and quality comparability, such as carbon credit rating services; • Technologies to support robust measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV); • Multilateral rules, guidance, and procedures developed under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the international aviation sector's global carbon market-based measure, which shape certified emissions reductions and removals that often find their home in VCMs'; and • Advances in the development of market infrastructure to improve transparency and liquidity, as well as the integrity of market transactions.

Since 2021, sovereign defaults and debt relief requests have decreased, and financial markets have reopened for low-income countries. Yield spreads for emerging markets have returned to pre-pandemic levels, reflecting investor confidence. However, about 15% of emerging markets remain vulnerable, and low-income countries will need to refinance nearly $60 billion in external debt annually over the next two years. 15% of these countries are already over-indebted, and 40% are at high risk of over-indebtedness. As highlighted by this IMF study, it is crucial to continue making progress on debt. The Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable will continue to address restructuring challenges by harmonizing the procedures of official and private creditors and proposing liquidity solutions, such as coordinated liquidity lines, debt management operations, and risk-sharing instruments to attract new capital.

The release of the "Rewiring for Success" report provides a dynamic blueprint for integrated and strategic action across government and the corporate and financial sectors, grounded in citizens' priorities.   A collaboration between BRAE, Capitals Coalition, CETEx (Centre for Economic Transition Expertise), ICAEW, Value Balancing Alliance and Rewired Earth, it is part of a work stream that aims to support coherence in the now cacophonous sustainability space. Corporate investments in climate-tech have consistently increased since 2005, even when other sources of investment declined. The startups they invest in are more likely to achieve a successful exit. Public grants are not significantly associated with exits on their own but are likely to act as catalysts for high-risk startups. Publicly funded startups exit at a higher rate with the addition of corporate investment (155% increase) compared with other private investment (78% increase). #climatetech #corporateVC #venturecapital

🌿🔍 How Corporate Climate Change Mitigation Actions Affect the Cost of Capital Climate change mitigation is becoming a pivotal factor in determining the financial health of businesses. A recent study led by Yizhou Wang, Siyu Shen, Jun Xie, Hidemichi Fujii, Alexander Ryota Keeley, and Managi Shunsuke, published earlier in May 2024 in Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, sheds light on a critical aspect of this dynamic: how corporate climate actions influence the cost of capital. Key Findings: - Higher Emissions, Higher Costs: The study, which analysed data from approximately 2,100 Japanese listed companies between 2017 and 2021, reveals a clear correlation between corporate emissions and the cost of capital. Companies with higher carbon intensity face increased costs of equity, debt, and weighted average cost of capital. - Benefits of Transparency: Companies adhering to the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) guidelines and transparently sharing climate-related information benefit from lower overall capital costs. While such disclosure is linked to an increased cost of debt, it concurrently lowers the cost of equity and overall capital, underscoring the financial benefits of transparency and accountability in climate actions. - Commitment vs. Action: Importantly, the study found that mere corporate commitment to climate change, as opposed to tangible climate actions, showed no significant impact on the cost of capital. This highlights the significance of actionable strategies over symbolic commitments. - Industry-Specific Impact: The relationship between climate mitigation actions and the cost of capital was notably stronger in industries where climate change is recognised as a material issue. This suggests that industry context plays a crucial role in how climate actions influence financial outcomes. Strategic Recommendations: - Adopt TCFD Guidelines: Aligning with TCFD recommendations and prioritising actionable climate strategies can lower your company's cost of capital. - Industry Focus: For sectors where climate change is a material issue, such as energy, utilities, and manufacturing, the financial incentives for robust climate actions are even more pronounced. - Move Beyond Commitments: Implementing concrete climate actions rather than just commitments can significantly enhance your financial standing. It's also important to note that as of 2024, the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) has transferred its monitoring responsibilities to the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)​.
