Cisco and CAE Technology Services Limited have partnered with Cambridgeshire schools to make their classrooms more sustainable. Nice to see StREAM get a mention in yesterday’s OFS Independent Report: Approaches to strategic improvement described in TEF 2023 submissions   The report is based on an analysis of the submissions of 31 providers whose TEF 2023 rating was higher than their previously held TEF rating. It considers providers’ accounts of how strategic changes have been planned, of specific steps that have been taken, and how providers set about evidencing these improvements.   Teesside University explains that its planning has been enhanced by its learner analytics platform ‘which provides personalised dashboards for staff and students to monitor engagement with learning and associated interventions, including records of tutorials, library resources engagement, attendance records and online interactions’ (p9). This means that not only can their review and planning cycles be informed by realtime data, but individual students can be better supported. Teesside University’s analytics platform, StREAM, ‘facilitates seamless referrals and monitoring of individual student cases between Personal Tutors and other support functions, providing a single source of truth for data and subsequent actions’ (p9). This has allowed academic and student support functions to come together in a unified approach and ‘draw upon multiple points of intelligence gathering’ (p9).   https://lnkd.in/eTrFf84X

Ensuring flexible workflows through print in the public sector. Across the UK Government and other institutions in the public sector, legacy IT systems remain a big problem. Using outdated technology can not only cause errors or failure to deliver services, but also serious risks when it comes to the security of confidential information and ultimately, the reputation of established organizations. Print continues to play a crucial part in digital infrastructures across the public sector, with the ability to impact long-term productivity, success and resilience. In fact, according to Quocirca, 49% of public sector organisations experienced data losses in 2023 due to unsecure printing.  In order to achieve its ambitious priorities efficiently and securely from decarbonising the economy to Net Zero and Levelling Up the UK in terms of equal opportunity the Government must ensure that legacy IT, including print ecosystems, are replaced with modern devices and software. Recently, we've been focusing on how schools connected with the West Yorkshire National Centre for Computing Education Hub have used the 'I Belong' programme to increase students' belonging in computer science, particularly girls, and sharing their stories with other local teachers. How does one teacher attribute the increase in students wanting to study GCSE computer science in September, with over 30% of students being girls, when the national average last year was 19%? They're talking about successes from their curriculum with physical computing activities, engaging with computing ambassadors, and getting involved with student events and competitions to build supportive teams. The research literature defines students' sense of belonging in computer science in various ways. We've taken an example from Blaney and Stout (2017), who describe a sense of academic belonging as "the subjective feeling of fitting in and being included as a valued and legitimate member of an academic discipline" to think about showcasing student achievements in West Yorkshire. Based on this, we're looking to host a student symposium featuring individual and group achievements from students studying in local schools. An event featuring near-peer role models sharing their projects, experiences, and successes in computer science learning and activities. For example, one school with a group of Y13 students completing the Cyber EPQ from the Chartered Institute of Information Security for the first time shared the themes of projects with positive student feedback about their experiences last week. Not only have they committed to continuing the EPQ next year, but there's a strong narrative with the girls who have completed the qualification in this cohort. Interest from others in their topics and changes in personal choices for their next pathway into university study is favourable towards cyber and computer science, something their teacher is keen for younger students to hear from near-peers. Teachers will use many local activities as evidence towards their 'I Belong' school certificate, including attending the STEM Fest in Bradford in July, where students meet STEM Ambassadors and get involved in computing-related activities, and the Horizons Online Cyber Careers Event on 7 June organised by RTC North with Computing and Cyber Ambassadors. 💡Education in the AI Era💡 Absolutely agree with Dr Omar Al-Janabi aua arma here what a discussion! Thanks to Lucy Batley and Alison Shaw for hosting and to everyone participating in discussion on AI in Education. Bigger brains than mine will be taking this forward but for me a few things sprung to mind 💡 Just like #Ageing we start #Learning from the day we are born (perhaps before) to the day we die. 💡 Just like our #ageingintelligence we should be capturing our all intelligence and gather, learn and share our knowledge from people learning, teaching and those in industry. We have found through our journey at the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing and #VoiceGlobal that at the heart of gathering any kind of intelligence needs to be the people, in this case the learners (at ALL ages and from ALL backgrounds including ALL aspirations). Thanks in part to AI the world is changing and the way we are learning is also changing 'What role will Education play in the AI Era?' time will tell but reassuring that there are some great people talking about it. Alison, Lucy I'm looking forward to what comes next but with the window of opportunity open is it time to be brave and be bold and to encourage the North East to do something groundbreakingly different with Education?

Taken together, the draft Children’s Safety Codes demand a significant shift from tech companies in safeguarding UK children online, surpassing current industry standards. These codes emphasise that platforms' core design and operational decisions need to prioritise safety to ensure children are protected effectively. Ofcom outlines over 40 actionable measures that online services must implement to enhance children's safety. These include: 🔹Carrying out robust age-checks to stop children accessing harmful content. 🔹 Ensuring that algorithms which recommend content do not operate in a way that harms children. 🔹 Introducing better moderation of content harmful to children. 🔹 Firms must first assess the risk their service poses to children and then implement safety measures to mitigate those risks. 🔹 Children must also be able to provide negative feedback directly to the recommender feed, so it can better learn what content they don’t want to see. 🔹 All user-to-user services must have content moderation systems and processes that ensure swift action is taken against content harmful to children. 🔹 Have clear policies essential for defining prohibited content, prioritising reviews, and ensuring well-resourced and trained content moderation teams. 🔹 Ofcom will launch an additional consultation later this year on how automated tools, including AI, can be used to proactively detect illegal content and content most harmful to children. Subject to responses to the consultation, which must be submitted by 17 July, Ofcom expected to publish their final Children’s Safety Codes of Practice within a year. #ChildrensSafety #OnlineSafety #TechIndustry #UKRegulations
