Boards of Directors – How Relevant To The Business Is The Board? In 2014, activist investor Starboard Value successfully replaced all 12 directors on the board of Darden Restaurants. The following shows the Darden incumbent board at the time of Starboard's proxy fight, Starboard’s value creation plan initiatives, the Starboard director nominees and the before and after performance (revenue, EBITDA, EBITDA margin and stock price). Note especially the direct relevance of each Starboard nominee to the industry or some aspect of the value creation plan. How often do you see this level of relevance on public company boards?

Innovative Leaders are different. It makes sense, but until I heard Linda Hill on the podcast Think Smart Talk Fast, I had no idea the differentiators. This month, I summarize her interview, and her discussion of the topic of Innovative Leadership. Including the key aspects of: - Creative Abrasion (trust me, this word is sticky, but it works!) - Creative Agility - Creative Resolution I also tie this in with the importance of staying true to your core organizational values. It's no wonder why the innovative arm of Biotech/Pharma is the more nimble, agile, innovative start-up companies! Let me know what you think 💡 🌿 https://lnkd.in/gcFdtk3X

His career started when someone said to him, “well, have you thought about venture capital? We don’t think that you’d be any good at it.” The rest is history. Today’s Alt Goes Mainstream episode features one of the legends of the venture capital industry. Peter Barris joined New Enterprise Associates (NEA) in 1992 after a storied operating career as President and COO at Legent Corporation and an executive at GE Information Services. He served as Managing General Partner and Chairman of NEA from 1999 to March 2024. Under Peter's leadership, NEA saw tremendous success, growing into one of the world's largest venture capital firms and raising the largest-ever venture capital fund a number of times. Today, NEA's AUM stands over $25B. Peter was responsible for investing in a number of foundational and industry-transforming technology companies, including Salesforce, UUNET, Groupon, WebMD, Workday, CareerBuilder, Tempus AI, and more. We had a fascinating discussion about the early days of venture capital and how the industry has evolved. We covered: * The inside story of how almost every other Partner said no but Peter's investment turned out to be a 75x return. * What's the “best characteristic and the death characteristic” of an entrepreneur? * In today's hypercompetitive market do VCs have enough time to make good decisions? * Why the world of venture capital is about influence. * What does it mean to earn an entrepreneur’s trust as a VC? * Why VCs with operating backgrounds can bring unique value to startups. * How NEA came up with the term "Venture Growth Equity." * How can a VC tell that a founder is good at experimentation and that they have the good judgment? * Why specialization and domain expertise are prerequisites in today’s venture industry. Thanks to Ultimus Fund Solutions for sponsoring this episode of the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. Thanks Peter for coming on the show. It was an honor and a pleasure to hear your views on the evolution of an industry and for you to share your wisdom and experiences. https://lnkd.in/eEJGEFWe

Good morning everybody! Over 15 years ago, Boston New Technology helped to pioneer the concept of The Startup Showcase and in a short time began to generate massive impact for the tech and business scene. I pitched my startups at the showcase, as did Jason and countless other luminaries here in New England and beyond. As Nathan Therrien once told me: (I paraphrase) "The showcase was something to look forward to. It was a staple. A can't miss kind of thing". For that reason, BNT isn't just bringing the Startup Showcase back officially, we're doing so purposefully in the following way: The Global Virtuals, on EKOS.AI These will be held monthly and exclusively on EKOS. These events are designed to connect with our international audience, featuring innovative startups from around the globe in a dynamic and interactive virtual environment. It’s a fantastic opportunity for startups to gain global exposure and for our community to experience the forefront of technological innovation. All startups who participate in Precision Pitch Practice and want to can qualify for the end-of-month showcase. The Grand Showcases: We will now be hosting 4 Yearly Grand Showcases, rotating across tech hubs in Boston and New England. Each of these prestigious events will spotlight ten outstanding startups, blending local and virtual interactions to enrich both our regional and global tech ecosystems. These showcases will blend what those familiar with the old showcases remember and miss with new, relevant, and exciting innovations. We'll be working with some amazing partners and ensuring that every Grand Showcase will be an unforgettable experience. The dates for both our Globals and Grands will be released this upcoming Friday as part of the BNT Extra Byte blog -- thanks to Mohit Ravindra Kamble, Rithiga Vijayakumar, and Harshita Nimbal. Thanks everyone for being patient with us, keeping the faith, and being awesome with your feedback. The Showcase is back! #BostonNewTechnology #BNT #BNT_StartupShowcase #startups #entrepreneurship

In the following HBR post, articulates four roles of a Chief of Staff: 1. Integrator: connecting work streams that would otherwise remain siloed 2. Communicator: linking the leadership team and the broader organization 3. Honest Broker and Truth Teller: when the leader needs a wide-ranging view without turf considerations 4. Confidant: without an organizational agenda Personally, as a process person, the first two come naturally however it's the last two (I have found) that identify the top tier Chief of Staff. The role truly is about making the leader more effective and ensuring there are no gaps to fill. https://lnkd.in/g6M9jhAV

Dear #Boston, #NewYork, #SiliconValley, IBM, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Meta The #RhodeIsland high-tech startup community is thriving. Twenty impressive startup teams are being lead by bold and daring technical cofounders. The #Startups meet 2 to 3 times a week to cross-pollinate and work on brilliant, defensible solutions to difficult problems in the #AI, LLM, communication, medical, legal, health, productivity, CRM, retail, restaurant, entertainment, entrepreneurship and other fields. These tech savvy, boot strapping, startup founder teams are hungry, scrappy, resilient, revenue-driven, intelligent and customer-FOCUSED. Perhaps what I love the most is how real and deep the community bond is among these Founders. DevAccelerator is supporting them with up to $100,000 in capital, $100,000 in venture-code-capital, entrepreneurial mentorship and much, much more. "If the #GateKeepers choose to ignore you, disrupt them!" The Rhode Island Unicorns are coming! And thank you @RIHUB for your eternal and very public support. You are an amazing partner. #CustomerFocused #BuildThingsPeopleDemand #DisruptTheFuture #CreateAndCarveOutTheFuture #WeveGotNext #LessTalkMoreWalk #DeepTech #SoftwareEngineers

Given that I live and breathe helping #founders with Go-to-Market and Product/Market fit, I spend a LOT of time reading anything I can on the subject. I came across an AMAZING piece from First Round Capital, by Emery Rosansky that is worth sharing. 👀 The article, "The Most Common Go-to-Market Questions This Expert Gets from Early Founders" is long, so for now I will focus on her section about "Running a sales call", since a ton of founders that I coach have a touch of PTSD when you mention the word "selling" to them. The key takeaways from Emery's article are: 1️⃣ Practice is Imperative: Regardless of whether you're new to sales or have been doing it for a while, practice is key to improving. The more you practice, the better you become at running high-impact sales calls. 2️⃣ Record and Review: Recording your sales calls and reviewing them can provide valuable insights into your performance. Tools like Grain or Copilot can help with this. Use a consistent scorecard to evaluate your calls. 3️⃣ Seek Feedback: It's essential to have someone you trust listen to your recorded calls, score them using the same scorecard, and provide you with detailed feedback. Constructive feedback is critical for improvement. 4️⃣ Roleplay for Improvement: Practice role-playing with a trusted colleague to work on areas where you might struggle, such as handling objections or closing the call effectively. 5️⃣ Start with the PBC (Purpose, Benefit, Check): Set a clear agenda and purpose for the call from the beginning. Make sure both you and the prospect agree on the call's objectives and desired outcomes. 6️⃣ Excavate the Impact: Go beyond surface-level questions and understand the deeper impact of the prospect's challenges. This helps create urgency and positions your solution as a must-have. 7️⃣ Use the Prospect's Words: Leverage insights gathered during discovery to strengthen the connection between the prospect's challenges and your solution. Show how your product directly addresses their specific pain points. 8️⃣ Harness the Power of Storytelling: Incorporate storytelling into your sales calls to evoke emotions. Stories about other customers who faced similar challenges or overcame objections can be compelling. My first job after college was in sales for Xerox and I've studied sales frameworks for 30 years before creating the FORGE Framework. What you can learn from Emery or any sales framework, is that sales doesn't need to be scary, icky, pushy, or anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are offering something that offers real perceived value to someone with a genuine need, you are helping them achieve a goal. But the key there is that you are selling the RIGHT thing to the RIGHT prospect. Start with a small, well defined market. It'll make selling easier & help you get the social proof you need to move to the next segment of your market. Let me know if this was helpful #Founders #foundercoaching #FoundersForge #Startuplife

About to step into the #HaxDemoDay today in Newark! Any ventures I should look out for, any from the TechCrunch list you're watching? Excited to meet the hard tech startups, backed by SOSV, working to sustainably tackle our biggest challenges across climate, industrial automation & human health. In a landscape where capital-intensive ventures often struggle to find the necessary support, HAX stands out by providing not just funding, but also essential resources and spaces for hard tech startups. (The new space has an impressive lab). Seeing accelerators like HAX adapt and innovate to meet the unique needs of startups will catalyze the next decade of innovation and hopefully a more sustainable, resilient world.🌱 #DemoDayExcitement #ClimateInnovation #HardwareStartups #Sustainability #HaxAccelerator https://lnkd.in/ebymt9YZ
