  • 1st place ‘news writing’ competition

Cal State University Northridge High School Journalism Day

About 40 students competed virtually. We heard a live interview virtually with an ACLU attorney who spoke about a case regarding a COVID-19 outbreak at an ICE Detention Center. I then wrote a 487-word breaking news story in 40 minutes about the case. They are judged by professional journalists.

  • National College Match Finalist

    Questbridge

This award required a lengthy application process including four essays, 7 shorter questions, financial information, extracurricular activities and two letters of recommendation.

  • 2 nominations for “Best News Writing”

    Los Angeles Press Club Awards

A classmate and I were nominated twice; in May 2019 & June 2020 by our journalism advisor. The 2019 article was about a girls’ lacrosse coach who was arrested for sexually assaulting minors. 2nd nomination was about the LA teacher strike. We were up against collegiate publications both times. In 2019, we also received a $1,000 Frontiers Scholarship.

  • $500 Jolene Combs Scholarship

    Journalism Education Association

The scholarship application includes a recommendation from a journalism advisor and three 500-word essays as well as an academic transcript. Finalists are then selected and they go through a 15-minute interview process with professional journalists, who were also close friends with Combs, before they are selected for the award.

  • Honorable mention award in the 'news writing' category

    National Scholastic Press Association

This competition was held at the national convention in Anaheim, Cali. High School journalists from across the country attended the 4-day event. I spent the few weeks prior to the event preparing by practicing and studying AP Style. We listened to an interview about illegal pet breeding. I then wrote an approx. 350-word story based on the interview.
