On the road again tomorrow! We're wrapping up the installation of weather station sensors in the northern San Joaquin Valley. But how do we decide where to put these stations in the first place? Well, it primarily comes down to a couple of factors. 1. We aim to pinpoint locations that are meteorologically optimal. Ideally, our weather stations should be positioned at specific heights above ground, away from any obstructions, and in open areas with ample airflow and sunlight exposure. 2. We consider the unique needs of growers. We collaborate closely with growers like Matt Cox of Cox & Perez Farms to understand the specific challenges they face in their operations. For instance, if they're contending with varying wind patterns, we'll prioritize finding a location that can capture the wind data needed to deliver a more accurate forecast. Everything we do is about providing California with accurate forecasts for the benefit of our state's communities and future.

Environmental Benefits: Trees play a crucial role in mitigating air pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide and other pollutants, as well as providing shade and cooling effects, which can help reduce energy consumption for cooling during hot weather. 2. Health and Well-being: Access to green spaces and trees has been linked to improved mental health, reduced stress levels, and increased physical activity. Increasing the tree canopy can contribute to creating healthier and more livable communities. 3. Urban Resilience: Trees help mitigate the impacts of climate change by providing natural cooling and reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses. They also help manage stormwater runoff and reduce soil erosion, contributing to overall urban resilience. 4. Community Engagement: Involving the community in tree planting and maintenance activities can foster a sense of ownership and pride in the urban forest. Engaging residents, businesses, and organizations in tree planting events and educational programs can help build a more sustainable and resilient city. 5.Long-term Planning: Developing a comprehensive plan for increasing and maintaining the city's tree canopy is essential for ensuring the success and sustainability of the initiative. This includes selecting appropriate tree species, prioritizing areas for planting, and implementing effective maintenance practices. Environmental change is often slow and gradual, we don't notice it until one day the change is impacting our daily life and then we take note. Coastal erosion is often overlooked until a storm and then suddenly there is a mad dash to save a home. This innovative low-tech approach to monitoring the coastline is a great way to observe change over time. #Shorelock can reduce sand loss over time and should be an integral part of a State's coastal strategy.

California's weather patterns are as diverse as its landscapes. But what does "normal precipitation" mean for our state? At Weather Tools, we define “normal precipitation” as the long-term average amount of rain, snow, and other forms of precipitation that California receives within a given water year. This baseline is crucial for a few key reasons: - Water Management: Knowing the normal precipitation levels helps us manage our water resources more effectively. - Agriculture: Farmers rely on this data to plan and optimize crop production. - Infrastructure Planning: Engineers and city planners use these insights to design resilient infrastructure. - Disaster Preparedness: Understanding precipitation trends aids in preparing for potential natural disasters like floods and droughts. Given California's diverse geography, precipitation can vary significantly from one region to another. 💧 🍇 California is the only major agricultural state to rely on drip irrigation for more than 50% of its irrigated land. 🌊 🍓 Even more surprising: some states rely on flood irrigation for nearly 100% of their irrigated acreage! These were just two of the many surprises I found when taking a closer look at the data from the 2018 USDA NASS Census of Irrigation. As the growing season kicks off this year, I'm challenging myself to write one post a week covering a different topic related to farming, using publicly available data sources wherever possible. Lots to add to this article, certainly not enough space in this format! Water consumption and the general reduction of available water to the south west is a massive problem, converting agricultural land into energy production could help to curtail water usage while still maximizing land space productivity for growers. There are serious concerns with rapid development of energy projects not just as mentioned in the article around design, layout, and permanence but also infrastructure. California will need to connect sustainable energy to the grid, store that energy for a cloudy day, and be capable of distributing the energy where it needs to go. If California growers suddenly shift to solar and wind en mass, can California efficiently leverage those resources? Finally, I think there could be interesting ways to incorporate solar into agriculture. Solar panels could offer shade to cattle with space for forage to grow between them. In this way solar projects could restore natural habitats, produce energy, and offer cattle a place to openly graze. Crops can even be incorporated between panels in different configurations.

Their leaves act as natural filters, improving air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory problems for city residents. 3. Aesthetic Appeal: Canopy trees often have attractive foliage and form, enhancing the visual appeal of streetscapes, parks, and neighborhoods. They can create green corridors and natural habitats for wildlife, contributing to a more pleasant and biodiverse urban environment. 4. Stormwater Management: The extensive root systems of canopy trees help to absorb and retain rainwater, reducing stormwater runoff and the risk of flooding. What is the CAP Report, and can it be trusted? (Part 3 of 4 of Farmer's Almanac vs CAP Report) Weather Tools' California Annual Precipitation (CAP) Report is a specialized forecast focusing solely on water year precipitation and providing it with high accuracy. With CAP, you get a modern, data-driven approach, particularly tailored for applications requiring precision, such as water resource management and planning. Its forecast provides detailed estimates for water year total precipitation in 20 percent ranges relative to normal, supported by a robust empirical validation process. This involves comparing predictions against observations from over 100 stations throughout California, ensuring that each forecast undergoes rigorous testing before being presented. Over the past seven years, the CAP Report has consistently aligned with actual precipitation levels observed by the National Weather Service, demonstrating its reliability. It's released a full year ahead of time and is never adjusted or changed. All to say, the CAP report, with its data-driven and validated approach, provides the precision and reliability needed for serious applications.

✨ Latest Paper Published 💧 The final chapter of my doctoral work is out now! This work dives into the intricacies of local water governance and management within irrigation districts in California’s San Joaquin Valley. By examining historical and cultural factors influencing water management practices, this study sheds light on the complex interplay among water resources, society, and the legal system. These insights are essential for developing resilient water management plans that address both climate change challenges and prolonged water access inequities. Check it out in the link below! More than 150 years of complex water governance and management have defined San Joaquin Valley irrigation districts and the region’s water access inequities and sociohydrologic instability. 2. About 86% of irrigation districts depend on groundwater, of which 12% rely exclusively on groundwater to supply irrigation demands. 3.  Disadvantaged communities within irrigation districts do not have increased water access or better environmental conditions than those outside irrigation district boundaries, which underscores the need for inclusive water management structures to address the multifaceted water and environmental inequities. #SanJoaquinValley #CAwater #wateraccessinequity #SGMA #agriculture #DACs #watergovernance #climatechange

It goes beyond, pinpointing California communities that experience the cumulative burden of pollution and social vulnerability using interactive visualizations. CalEnviroScreen takes a data-driven approach, considering environmental factors like air pollution levels and proximity to hazardous waste sites, health information like asthma and cancer rates, and socioeconomic indicators like poverty rates and race/ethnicity. By combining this data, we get a cumulative impact score, highlighting the most vulnerable census tracts facing the greatest environmental challenges.
