🤔 "What does it look like to practice responsible product development with GenAI in affordable housing?" Last week, Exygy had the chance to invite a group of affordable housing professionals and technical experts to a design sprint to discover if there were potential opportunities to leverage GenAI to solve known issues in the space of affordable housing. Let me lead with the fact that we knew there would be a healthy amount of skepticism, myself included, about whether we could identify appropriate use cases to leverage the technology. → We recognize we are serving traditionally marginalized communities who are more vulnerable to systemic inequities. → We understand that within these communities there is a certain mistrust of government services and new technology. → We respect that we are dealing with a history of scarce, dispersed, and biased data sets. 🙌 Given all of that, I was proud of what we were able to accomplish in the limited time we had. → We invited a diverse group of stakeholders representing housing counselors, leasing agents, and city staff with lived experience to speak about what the greatest needs are. → We got to hear from technical experts with experience working in the public sector to explain the promise, risks, and limitations of the technology including Michael Hany Elabd and Neil S. from U.S. Digital Response → Exygy was also able to present our method for how we propose to ensure ethical principles can be maintained with the use of responsible guardrails throughout the product development process. 💎 At a high level, some of what our team presented to ensure a principle-led process included: → Start with framing use cases: We need to weigh the need for AI against its risks and sustainability while identifying those who will be impacted. → Staff ethical champions: We need someone who is tasked, from the outset, with measuring any potential negative impacts as we go. → Invest in community partnership: We need to create a feedback loop with our community partners ensuring we are co-designing and continuing to listen to those who are directly affected. 👏 I’ll be posting a series of takeaways for folks who want to learn more about what we discussed and possibly apply some of what we came up with. I recently picked up a Bambulabs A1 Mini and it’s WILD. The attention to detail in the hardware design is next-level: linear rails for XY&Z, a color touchscreen display, vibration compensation, quick swappable nozzles, lightning-fast bed leveling, noise canceling built-in, AMS, the list goes on and on. Also, it costs $350. This gives my P1S a run for its money at half the price. I’m using it to print out business cards with PLA matte filament through a 0.2mm nozzle onto a smooth build plate, and after some slicer optimizations, the results are INSANE. I’m giving away my Ender V2 printer, lmk if anybody wants it. #design #productdesign #productdevelopment #onshape #cad #engineering #industrialdesign

New work for Remedy Robotics by the team at Play SF For stroke victims, minutes can mean the difference between a successful recovery and permanent disability or death. But in large swaths of the world, the specialist centers that can treat a cardiovascular emergency are out of reach. Combining AI, robotics, and medicine, Remedy Robotics is building the world’s first remotely-operated endovascular robot to enable specialists to treat patients from anywhere. Their goal? To help create a world where access to vascular care isn’t a matter of luck—it’s a matter of fact. There was a lot to capture. The brand needed to signal radical technological disruption and a humanistic vision. It would need to set them apart from the bland status quo for medical device companies. Help them attract the best minds across machine learning, medicine, and robotics. All while earning the trust of the medical industry, doctors, and future patients. If you look at satellite photos of rivers and other waterways, you’ll notice how closely they echo the appearance of the human endovascular system. We used this striking imagery as a visual metaphor for Remedy’s mission of bringing life-changing care to anyone, anywhere in the world. The Remedy Robotics logomark is made of two parts. The first is an angled upper section pointing forward, a nod to Remedy’s future-looking approach. The arched lower section suggests the cross-section of an artery. Together they create a legible letter and shape, as well as a person stepping toward progress. When viewed from the side, the logo resembles two lowercase r’s. This feels like sensationalist click bait... or did I miss something Ron Fritz 1. Isn't this basically a HOOPs demo app? Is this a change in status quo?Techsoft already effectively provides many examples/apps, and it seems like they will just provide even more and license them out so people can hit the ground running faster. I would think that software engineering firms provide value by gluing together more than a couple of well known libraries. The article also mentions other up and coming libraries that further show this accessibility bar is changing. Shouldn't we make CAD import and visualization more ubiquitous? If this helps make CAD BREP data a standard low bar for software vendors, I think that actually helps the industry. 2. How is this like Carta? Carta monetized and sold inside information without consent of the people who gave that information. Techsoft made a press release. They seem to be transparent about their motivations and goals. Of course any company that licenses something/provides a platform has special information that would aid in M&A. That's the basis for vertical integration moves and in this case what feels like consolidation. It seems more like people can't easily sell a "flashlight app" anymore. 3. Who actually cares about this? Techsoft is in a natural symbiosis with the companies it works with. It won't compete against any major CAD players because it would causes issues with the licensing of the CAD formats. It doesn't make sense to compete against anyone providing real value beyond connecting a few libraries together because they would lose their user base. The parasolid model has nominally worked well. Maybe I missed something, or I'm missing a perspective. I'm happy to not make any real strategic decisions about writing my own CAD importer. There are more interesting problems to concentrate on.

We're design thinking experts, not AI experts, so we give people a chance to insert generative AI into a design challenge in strategic points and reflect/discuss/build their own point of view.”

Did we really need that free delivery in under 15 minutes? Did we fully explore all the potential side-effects of one-click purchasing? Sure, some millennial pet parents may have been able to afford to put their little fella in a luxury dog spa, but was that really the best use of that precious real estate? Over the past 15 years, it feels like user-centric thinking (in its most myopic form) has become increasingly co-opted as a way to ruthlessly target a subset of the population at the cost of others, prioritizing the needs of a brand’s ‘most valuable segment’ with little regard for the secondary and tertiary effects on wider society. Now, a new generation of organizations and business leaders are calling this into question. And, as a broad set of strategists and creatives, we have the opportunity to do the same. As part of the NYCxDESIGN festival, DesignStudio is opening its doors to discuss ways in which government, organizations, agencies, and brands are starting to ditch pure user-centric thinking in favor of more community-minded approaches and what it means for the design industry as a whole. Innovative solutions emerge from a deep understanding of what people are missing from everyday products. 🤔 At Beyond Design, Inc., our designers uncovered key insights about single-use cutlery through extensive research at hospitals and eateries. Users sought more hygienic, intuitive dispensers without electronics, and establishments required minimal waste and effortless maintenance. Keeping hygiene and sustainability needs top-of-mind, we developed the Simpull Touch for US Foods. The Simpull uses an ingenious mechanical system that dispenses utensils one at a time, eliminating the need to touch anything other than the end user’s tableware. The Simpull’s vacuum-formed cartridges outperform typical dispensers and fit 300 utensils in universal slots for forks, spoons, and knives. Plus, implementing Braille and icons on the kitchenware makes this product accessible to users with vision impairment. By enabling a product experience with minimized touch points, the Simpull Touch promotes hand hygiene and counter organization. Its thoughtful cartridge system also simplifies upkeep by allowing quick replenishment. At the heart of this solution lies our human-centered design process. We uncovered the needs of both the people using the Simpull and the establishments housing them.
