Recently, SHRM removed “Equity” from their DEI statement. This generated a lot of buzz, both negative and positive. There were arguments in comment threads. Many people threatening to cancel their memberships. Others dismissing genuine concerns. I immediately took away two things from this: — I'm grateful that we can have these conversations out in the open — No system is perfect, but for every given problem, there is a solution There’s no cheat code for how to conduct difficult discussions. But some ways are better than others. 👎 Ineffective ways: —Politicizing issues instead of infusing more humanity into them —Leaving little room for your mind to be changed —Writing off anyone with a differing opinion 😃 Effective ways (that will get you closer to a solution): —Conducting a discourse with thoughtfulness and generosity > self-righteousness —Recognizing that everyone has differing needs —Deprioritizing being “right” You will inevitably hear these topics arise in the workplace. In 2023, Tesorio was recognized as the 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 by the San Francisco Chronicle. One reason: We made space for these three activities: - In-Person Offsites: 🌴 Despite being fully remote, we gathered the entire team 1-2 times a year at a beautiful location. 70% of the time was dedicated to team activities, and only 30% to work. - Bi-Weekly Lunch and Learns: 🍽️ These sessions featured a rotating speaker from different teams, where a team member shared what they were currently working on and what was on their mind. Other employees could ask questions, helping everyone stay informed about what other teams were doing, especially since we often only interacted with our own teams. - Weekly Donut Chats: 🍩 This Slack app paired employees from different teams or departments for 30-minute sessions to help them get to know each other better. Remote culture is possible, but you have to know how. 𝐏𝐒: Of course, there are other pillars of remote culture, which I'll discuss in the coming weeks. Today's reading provided insightful reflections on trust and behavior. We often evaluate ourselves based on intentions, yet judge others by their actions. Steven M.R. Covey's "The Speed of Trust" highlights the importance of understanding intentions in our interactions. My take is that I should emphasize resilience in the face of trust issues, urging myself not to hastily distrust in situations. Corporate Culture Matters. Just Ask Your Board of Directors. I shared some thoughts on why it is important for boards to focus on Corporate Culture. We can no longer sit in board meetings and assume that the detrimental impact of people's behaviors is not going to affect the brand and the organization and that we as board members have a fiduciary responsibility to be aware of the organization culture. Tech sector leaders advocate the use of merit, excellence, and intelligence (MEI) as their recruiting strategy to hire the best and smartest talent. Some decry diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies for hiring suboptimum talent. (If they mean reducing qualifications, I agree. DEI should never lower hiring standards to achieve a "diversity" hire.) MEI advocates say they want to select the best talent without any bias in any direction. HR's journey from worker advocacy to relentless cost-cutting has been quite the ride. Remember when HR was all about nurturing talent and keeping unions at bay? Well, those days seem like ancient history. Over the years, economic turbulence pushed HR into a cost-slashing frenzy. But guess what? The pendulum is swinging back, and it's time for HR to reclaim its role as the champion of employees. Picture this: a job market so tight it squeaks. Unemployment rates have been rock-bottom, and productivity growth is crawling. With stress levels soaring and workplace demands rising, employees are burning out faster than a cheap candle. Recent strikes and walkouts, like those at Kaiser Permanente and CVS, are screaming for change. HR can't keep pinching pennies and expect to keep their best people happy. We need to shift our focus back to taking care of our people – and fast. Despite CEOs recognizing the importance of their workforce, many companies are stuck in old habits. Real wages are barely budging, promotions are like unicorn sightings, and lack of career development is driving people to quit. HR can be the hero here by showing leaders the true costs of their outdated practices. Imagine the impact when they realize high turnover costs more than a fancy new coffee machine! Remember, a happy employee is a productive employee. HR's mission? Get leaders to see that treating employees well isn't just nice—it's crucial for business success. Focusing on DIVERSITY and representation (the Noah’s Ark approach to DEI) is way easier than the INCLUSIVE CULTURE approach – but shifting to the latter is where you see real leader buy in and the business case happening more immediately!
