Real life interactive experiences are continuing to trend upwards. Hasbro, already planning on tv/film experiences, also has ambitious plans to expand its many iconic properties into new interactive venues. In New Jersey, Hasbro is launching its first ever branded arcade and family fun experience venue. Monopoly, Battleship and other board games have made their way into arcades and casinos as playable properties. But this is the first time all of Hasbro's properties will be contained and controlled as one cross-brand experience in an owned physical space. Puck News' podcast, "The Powers That Be", discusses the key factors behind its success and then takes a look at the fortunes of HBO/Max. My takeaways: - Discoverability -> Engagement -> increased ad revenue/lower churn rate - "Old Programming" represents a very significant opportunity for both streamers and advertisers - The road ahead will be different than the road already traveled Stormcast Cinema's average session times for our Western Mania and Amazing Classics channels are well over 2x the industry average, showing that a combination of classic movies and custom app design brings a highly engaged audience.

We spent some time in/around Nashville shooting for Sell on Amazon with Quinn Rudee of Hey Brutus. It was great working alongside Andeep Singh and seeing these seller stories come to life. What happens when your scrap business has the potential to become your main business? That's exactly what happened with Stephen Cox and his vinyl company, Craftables Whenever Stephen and his team created decals for customers, they were left with plenty of perfectly usable leftover scrap vinyl. In 2012, Stephen says that he really realized the opportunity to offer high-quality vinyl squares to the craft market. Crafting really started to take off in a different way during the pandemic. With increased demand, "things started getting missed." To meet that demand and to get better organized, the Craftables team leveraged Amazon API to pull in inventory data and sales data, and to scale up the business more efficiently. "Amazon's a great partner," Stephen shared. "They have supported us in a lot of different ways, sometimes in ways that we don't even realize we need." Looking ahead, the Nashville-based entrepreneur hopes to start additional Amazon businesses focused on other products, like tape. He also looks forward to sharing the knowledge he's gained about his experience selling in the Amazon store with other small business owners. Two very important observations about Sony here: 1️⃣ The fact that Sony bided its time through the streaming wars has been extensively covered in the trades. They resisted the urge to sink millions of 💲to create their own platform and instead purely profited off their catalog by dealing it to the content hungry +’s of the world. This stacked cash in their cabinets and also let them observe audience behavior without risk. Now Sony is flush and informed. 2️⃣ The Alamo acquisition shines a light on a very interesting division of Sony called Sony Pictures EXPERIENCES. If you go through the trouble of building a division with that title and you combine the details of point 1, I’d say Sony believes there is value to be mined in traditional and event theatrical. Sony, with its methodical approach, will certainly have massive sway over the future of exhibition. This is 💯% exciting news. Great to see one of the studios go another way and be diligent. I believe we will see a lot of leadership from Sony in the upcoming years. #alamo #sony #filmindustry #movies

In 1981, actor Robert Redford bought the United States Film Festival in Park City and turned it into the Sundance Institute. It started as an avant-garde festival that Robert took over in hopes of getting a return on his investment of local properties around the area. Over the years, Sundance has garnered a name brand like no other, leading their classes and labs to take over the mentorship role in indie filmmaking in contrast with the festival now mainly playing big name directors and producers. In April, Sundance Institute announcing their lease with Park City is up in 2027 came with a lot of excitement from cities like Savannah, Minneapolis, Santa Fe, Atlanta, and San Francisco bidding to take over as the festival’s new location. I’m excited for the potential of a new location shaking up the habits of Sundance, but I’m also scared for the future of what a wrong choice in city can look like. With the festival’s 80K in-person attendees versus over 200K online viewers, the location might not seem super significant, however I’m here to argue that this move will be pivotal in the development of independent filmmaking. These bidding processes work similar to how a city would vote for a sports team to come to their city, which means it’s incredibly complicated and like most complicated things, it can be simiplified by how much money & market a city has. If a city can offer Sundance a whole lot of financial support, a large population, tax incentives, buildings, or grant help, the festival will probably go to that city. In my opinion, the tax incentive powerhouse Savannah, Georgia and other California locations are in the running. However, California is much more of a destination to the industry than GA and has a much larger surrounding market. In conclusion, I think because of the money and destination factor, it’s highly likely Sundance will move to California. AND THIS WOULD BE A HUGE MISTAKE. SUNDANCE IS ABOUT GIVING THE UNDERDOG A CHANCE! Centralizing something that is suppose to be an entry point for emerging filmmakers in a place that is washed out with industry executives and already successful people will take away the spirit of Sundance. Festivals need to situate themselves to be open to new communities and possibilities because that’s where the life changing stories that should be put on the big screen are. I don’t know where Sundance Institute will go, and if it goes to tech bro valley San Francisco, it will be the nail in the corporate sponsorship coffin. I hope they go somewhere that isn’t their first thought, a place that gives them the opportunity to explore and develop a community that wouldn’t have had the chance otherwise. Sundance should be looking for a place where they can start a community that is unique to their mission of uplifting underrepresented voices. Sitting over here in the Middle East, we often look to the more developed markets assuming they have it all worked out in the West for the better. The reality is there are good lessons to learn from all over the world, but there are also bad precedents we should learn from. The US is one of those markets when it comes to performer and sound recording rights on radio that is broken. This needs to be fixed. The good news is we can learn from the mistakes and loopholes of others, to make a more egalitarian and fair system as we look to develop our own platforms starting from a clean slate.
