In the past, it has been a taboo for businesses to share their data with advertising giants like Google & Meta, fearing that the latter may expand horizontally to create a competing business model with all these shared data insights. To an extent that they rather use self-host on-premise analytics platform, than the cloud version 😓 As cookies are going away soon, there will be a surge in call for use of S2S tracking & conversion APIs to share more data with the advertising platforms for better campaign measurement accuracy. Is data sharing still a taboo or to make way for the future cookie-less environment?

CDPs are evolving… Cloud (and Mobile) accelerated martech fragmentation and created a lot of operational complexity… On top of that there is a rate of change problem, and 1:1 personalization is getting harder. Privacy, policy changes, and PII all at the center of it. V1 of CDPs simplified integrations. Integration of data sources, a unified customer view, and simplified integration to martech vendors. V1 CDPs created operational efficiencies. But…Integration has been commoditized (at least that’s the market perspective, even though its not reality — IYKYK). Now both ad tech and martech are experiencing a real platform shift — the era of AI is here. AI has already begun to radically transform marketing tech and customer data applications. Which means the next generation ot CDPs is upon us… Integration and efficiency is important but its no longer enough. The CDP has to be about intelligence…and delivering business outcomes. Continually improving customer context via integrated insights and predictions that make the data more valuable, the martech stack more valuable, and deliver better business outcomes. So rather than settling for a unified customer view, the foundation for cross-channel personalization requires an intelligent customer view. One built on clean and consented-customer data that is extensible and can be leveraged anywhere. The ‘Composable CDP’ thing has been cute but not much more than a distraction. Immature products (and founders) with aggressive product marketing, rolling out functionality that has already existed for a decade just on top of a different data store…not actually moving the industry forward, rather driving compute cost higher at a rate that significantly outpaces ROI. You can try to copy it but it gets pricey.

I have been telling anyone who would listen for the last 4 years, that Upfronts will be moving to programmatic at some point. I believe the role in the SSPs is to provide the solution between the Marketers needs (flexibility in budget, transparency, ease of activation, fluidity between publishers, reporting, etc.) and the publishers needs (forecasting dependency, yield management, reservation carve outs, compliance assurance, etc.) I understand that building something that addresses all of these needs is a tall order and a big investment. I’ve had a vision for a product functionality that I tried to bring to life for 4 years and at every place I’ve worked on it, I’m always met with a list of hurdles that exist. But I think that’s the point. These hurdles are the problem with fully making upfronts go all in on programmatic. The fragmentation still exists, the lack of ease of use, the overall buy-in, the mentality of ‘why build something so far in advance when we aren’t being asked.’ These keep advancements at bay. My hope is that in the near future we can move from the outdated traditional upfront process (transaction process) and move to a more modern, flexible, and transparent process supported by the programmatic infrastructure players. To be clear— I have yet to pitch the idea to my current employer, so the above does not represent their sentiment or opinions. ☺️ Sorry to be so ‘upfront’ about this…😉

The revolution will be televised!!!!! If Linear TV and programmatic had a baby, we would call it CTV. It inherents traits from both parents. Dave Morgan is spot on here, and many of the trends are well underway. I'll add one and say that until a) the sell side players merge direct and programmatic demand in unified auctions, and have a more real time view in demand fulfillment, and b) programmatic take rates come down even more, the majority of CTV will remain IO driven.

Insightful post on attribution models by Ruler Analytics! I find the U-shaped and Time Decay models especially reflective of consumer behavior from my own purchasing experiences. Curious to see if anyone has explored attribution models indexed to expected funnel journey times. Thoughts? #attribution #marketing #martech #data

Here's the problem with AI overviews. Regular AI is just predicting the next word so you can see how it goes to the riddle and gets this wrong. RAG AI is supposed to ground this by summarizing search results, but the search results are so broad and generic right now that those too misunderstand the query and go right to the popular riddle - and you get a crap answer. This is over exaggerated by my example, but it holds true for all complex non-trivial queries.

Chrome may have delayed its third-party cookie deprecation but that shouldn't change your approach. It will happen and it's already here for Safari and Firefox. Quantifying this dependance and any inefficiencies in your first-party data strategy is an important step in building the business case and plan solutions to overcome 3PCs eventual demise.
