The Alliance for Commercial Technology in Government has just issued its review and commentary on the PPBE Commission's Final Report. The report was a Tour de Force, chock full of recommendations to modernize the United States Department of Defense's antiquated budgeting process. The Alliance's mission is to make the DoD the indisputable first, best stop for every innovator with a hot new idea that could keep the USA ahead of its adversaries. The current acquisition process is widely regarded as antagonistic towards commercial startup companies, consigning them to work in the commercial world or with our adversaries first, putting our warfighters and taxpayers at a dangerous disadvantage. While most of the report and its recommendations were directed inwards towards fixing internal obstacles within the bureaucracy, many of the recommendations will have direct impact on how the DoD is perceived, and acts as a first customer. While we wholeheartedly endorse all the recommendations in the report, our assessment points out those suggestions that would most impact the ease at which innovators can scale up their sales within DoD such that DoD becomes the obvious best first stop. https://lnkd.in/eYnjn-HR

We need more GovTech funds backing innovative ideas to help democracy get back on track worldwide. Technology will fail unless the systems that govern it succeed. We need a lot of innovation in our political systems: better communities, better advocacy, smarter policy development, fairer elections, and the list goes on. Many of political problems can be solved or improved by technology. GovTech has been largely overlooked by investment, and look at the results. Now is an inspiring time for positive change. We can fund innovations that will make politics better for everyone. Let’s do it.

Will autonomous vehicles pick up speed off-road? Overland AI and Potential are pursuing, military, mining, and other off-road applications. These use cases are more compelling because they represent large markets, they are not as regulated as passenger transport roads, and they can address labor shortages. As Alexei Andreev of Autotech Ventures added, "And if you remove people, you immediately get a reduction in your insurance premiums." EVelution Energy applauds Jeffrey Nadaner’s precise grasp of the steps necessitated to orchestrate public and private capital to secure allied supply chains. This effort also requires support from U.S. Department of the Treasury and United States Department of Commerce to ensure American manufacturing has a path to sustainable economic prosperity. 🌍 Microsoft continues to lead the market in forward procurement of carbon removals, across both nature and engineered solutions, last week announcing their carbon credits deal with Oxy. This transaction, hot on the heels of procuring 18m tonnes of removals in the first half of the year, highlights Microsoft’s commitment to paying the true price of high quality carbon removal and the confidence to support new projects and technologies. ⚡️ The hidden cost of AI… As AI manifests in every part of our lives, it is easy to overlook the incredible power requirements for the processing needed to drive this technology. The numbers out of the key big tech players in recent weeks are jaw dropping. Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft expect to invest $40bn on building out processing power this year alone. These ventures are incredibly power hungry. Data centers are expected require consume +800TWh of power by 2026 according to the IEA, and BCG estimated data processing could represent 7.5% of all power consumption in the US by 2030. 💡…and the multi-pronged steps big tech is taking Its easy to see the urgency for mitigating the impact of these power requirements that is being demonstrated through: 🤝 The formation of the Symbiosis Coalition 🌱 The 18m tons of removals procured by Microsoft already this year 👉 Google’s shift in its emissions mitigation strategy announced last week We often think of energy companies as the primary emissions behemoths, and while that holds true today, the landscape is shifting. In addition to engaging with carbon markets, the big tech firms are investing heavily in renewable power generation given the inability of traditional utilities to respond: 🔋 10.5GW of renewables capacity to be installed in a Microsoft-Brookfield JV (at a price tag of $1bn per MW 🖥️ $650m paid by Amazon for a Pennsylvania-based datacenter powered by a nuclear reactor ☢️ $500m being raised by ChatGPT for Oklo, a developer of nuclear micro-reactors As renewable energy overtakes hydrocarbons in power generation growth and our lives demand increasingly more processing power, the dynamics are evolving. ✨ Seraphim Space Index Highlights: Taxonomy 🌌 🛰 Downlink: Historically, it has been one of the smaller investment segments. However, the current and previous quarters have seen multiple significant deals with $30m+ rounds (Armada, Second Front Systems, Skyloom Global and Skylo Technologies). As a result of these deals, the category has seen the most significant year-over-year growth in investment. Technologies related to communications and cybersecurity are key enablers for satellite communications, one of the largest markets addressed by space today. 🔭 Build: is seeing increasing investment. We attribute this to the growth in the space segment, creating a larger market opportunity for businesses providing the building blocks for the space economy in terms of satellites, payloads,  and software. This quarter saw Hadrian, which produces precision machined components, raise the second largest round at $117m. 🚀 Beyond Earth: No standout deals in Q1 24. The TTM period has seen significant activity in large rounds from Sierra Space, Axiom, True Anomaly and more. In H2 2023, this sector attracted the greatest investment as investors back the next generation of space infrastructure. The sector has shown significant growth compared to the previous TTM period. The Biden-Harris administration has released a new plan to transform the U.S. freight sector into a zero-emissions industry. 🚚 The initiative is backed by nearly $1.5 billion in funding. If successful, it will significantly reduce air pollution and promote public health. As part of the strategy, investments will target the transition of heavy-duty vehicles like buses and trucks to zero-emission alternatives. This is a good and important read on #FOAK projects and the ClimateTech Valley of Death, with good insight from some very sharp investors. One often overlooks aspect of this challenge is WHO will build these early commercial projects that are smaller and don't often appeal to top tier EPCs.
