The newest issue of The Pragmatic Engineer found a surprise uptick in eng hiring in the typically slow summer season - I'm curious to see how the macro environment impacts this uptick as we head into the fall, but I remain hopeful. I asked Gemini to give me the tldr of the article to share with my team (sorry, Gergely Orosz) and found it missed one of the most interesting pieces of the article. Gemini's highlights - Unexpected surge: Tech recruitment has seen an unusual spike in June and July, contrary to typical trends. Increased demand: Startups, especially AI-focused ones, are driving the hiring uptick. Global phenomenon: This trend isn't just limited to the US; Europe is also experiencing increased recruitment activity. Reasons for hiring: Companies are backfilling positions, investing in growth due to improved financials, and responding to increased VC funding. Challenges remain: While the job market is improving, finding qualified candidates and offering competitive compensation remains difficult for many companies. What I found most interesting - The nature of the backfills: the article finds that a lot of new headcount are actually backfills of folks that were "over-slashed" during rounds of layoffs. Not entirely surprising with the "trim the fat" and "rebuild lean" mentality, but interesting nonetheless. It’s a tale as old as startup time.  We pivoted! Over the past few months I’ve enthusiastically shared with friends and mentors my experience working with PhenoUI, frontend tools we built to build our mental health app-mindora. I invariably got the question, “Kerry, why aren’t you guys selling that?” My co-founder Dario Segura and I had pivoted before so we wanted to be really certain that focusing on our tools was the right move and that we weren’t just drinking our own kool aid. So, we reached out to developers, spoke to healthcare company technology leaders, and it has become abundantly clear—what we’ve built can empower healthcare tech teams to build apps REALLY FREAKING FAST. I’ve been building in healthcare for almost 15 years from medical devices and biopharma to consumer health. My background is in data and machine learning. Working with healthcare data to build products and models is definitely not for the faint of heart but getting those solutions into end-user hands has, in my experience, been the most difficult part. You can build a model, build an API, and now with GenAI it’s even easier to build incredibly powerful workflows and agents.  But getting it to actually reach the end user is a challenge, particularly in healthcare companies who rarely have the internal frontend capabilities required to build these apps. We know there is untapped technical potential at healthcare companies. One of the projects I’m most proud of in my career was creating a coding apprenticeship for scientists at #Amgen. I saw firsthand how tailoring a technical experience and capabilities to healthcare practitioners could be incredibly empowering for individuals and force multiplying for an organization. Going forward I’ll be sharing more about what we're up to at PhenoML and demos of what healthcare developers can build with our tools, PhenoUI. Founder <> founder convos are the biggest unlock for company building. I spent the last 2+ weeks in SF. Besides meeting with customers, I spent a ton of time with founders / early stage builders that I deeply respect (shoutout to Abhinav Asthana, Christina Cacioppo, Kevin Van Gundy, Akshay Kothari, Yuhki Yamashita, Tara Viswanathan, Celine Halioua, & Michelle Valentine). I’m extremely grateful to have the chance to spend time with these folks. Some reflections from these brilliant people. 1/ People > everything. A company is a collection of people. Company success comes down to hiring the best people. 2/ Startup problems aren’t *that* unique. Startups are HARD and even if you think your challenges are specific to your company, they’re likely not. Someone else has faced the same thing, and you likely don’t need to reinvent the wheel. 3/ Let some fires burn. Focus > trying to do everything. As a startup, you can’t fix everything at once with limited resources (even if you want to). You need to focus on the stuff that will move the needle the most. Pick the top 1 or 2 problems, fix them, then move onto the next. It’s okay if some fires need to burn for a little in the meantime. 4/ Company operating cadences are key. We’re redoing our cadences now, so it was super interesting to learn how others run their board meetings, leadership meetings, all hands, etc. A consistent theme for board & leadership meetings is to have everyone complete a prompt in written doc, share with each other, then use the time to have meatier discussions. 5/ Be competitor aware, customer obsessed. Competitors cause unnecessary noise. Build products and make decisions based on customer / market need and founder intuition, never based on competition. Are these learnings helpful? I just wrote release notes for the last two weeks to share with Bullish and CoinDesk folks on Slack. I can't put the full set here, but I wanted to share a few: * Ad algorithm improvement to reduce ad density with the aim of having only 1 ad in view at a time, and on mobile, let people have a screen full of content with no ads. * The new price page template should launch in the next 1-2 weeks. Our initial tests show an increase in search impressions of 50%! Plus, they're sexier with more features. * We built some new geotargeting features that I'm pretty excited about. * We're testing some new solutions for translating content. * We're wrapping up design work for a new home page layout 🤘

we re-launched Surface Labs last week and drove 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 to our website. the best part was that we were able to use our own product (Surface Labs (YC S23) to: 1. enrich leads 2. view funnel drop-off metrics in real-time 3. make adjustments to the form (we tested 4 different variations!) 4. and automate + personalize our follow-ups using the additional data our form collected but the most useful feature by far was the ability to 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 from visitors who didn't complete the final step of our form (booking a demo) but still opted-in to being contacted -- most of the time, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙙. check out the form on our home page at withsurface.com !

It was great hearing from Tony Xu, 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 & 𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝗼𝗳 DoorDash, speak at our weekly YC dinner. Here it is another AI product that gets mixed/bad reviews. Certainly not as bad as the UI Pin, the Rabbit R1 is still too early, not yet an MUP (Minimum Usable Product). I am excited for these kind of products that are innovating an oversaturated app-based market, but Marques Brownlee is actually giving a good advice: "Buy a product for what it is now, not for what it promises it will be in the future". That was the whole point with minimum viable (or usable) products. Make a product that solves a well defined huge problem for a specific niche of people, and build on top of that. I think it's ok to sell non-refined products, as long as they are still solving that well defined huge problem. To understand what the MVP is, is one of the first biggest obstacles for every startup. This being said, I would still like to see more companies working on AI products. What about you? #ai #rabbitr1 #aipin

Through helping our founders with their initial hires, it's great to see mandating an in-person work culture and requiring relocation for candidates living in another city. Here's my hot-take on why an in-person work culture is best for company success: (1) The 'green dot' on Slack shows your online which doesn't equate to commitment. Inevitably, the people showing up everyday in-office start to question/resent those that do not. That resentment calcifies and erodes culture. (2) It's way faster to know if somebody is a good / bad fit for your company when seeing them everyday: conviction, temperament, camaraderie, effort, etc... (3) Before PMF is reached, communication and iteration amongst the team is crucial to accelerate this milestone. Insights and information are simply missed when not present. Curious if other founders agree and have seen any of these come to fruition through their in-person work culture....

Stripe held Sessions 2024, its yearly annual conference in San Francisco last week. Yes, there were a ton of announcements, including the return of crypto to Stripe, but the one that caught my eye was Stripe de-coupling payments from its software stack. This is HUGE, so let me explain. Historically, Stripe required its clients to use its payment services as a gateway to access its software stack such as billing, invoicing, and fraud prevention. However, this requirement has been removed to allow businesses to utilize Stripe's suite of services more modularly. This strategic pivot is intended to reduce friction for existing and potential customers who may only need specific components of Stripe's offerings, and not necessarily the payment processing solutions. Ok, so this means that you can use Adyen, Checkout.com or Worldpay as your payments processor and use Stripe as your Billing Engine! I distinctly remember how much of a hot button issue this used to be at Stripe and it's interesting how Stripe has come around to this outcome. At Xflow, we've architected our payments and product infrastructure very similarly to what Stripe used to do, which is that product and payments are tightly coupled. Maybe it's time to rethink this? I’ve been keeping a running list on things I wish I knew or did while working in product before transitioning to founding Inari (YC S23) and here's the 2nd part! Note: this pic is me on our 1st day building in SF for YC. Smiling through how fun all the incorporation paperwork was 😂 Mastering growth and distribution 💌 I never truly internalized the adage “first time founders obsess over product and second time founders obsess over distribution” until we launched Inari for the first time last year and initially heard crickets. I hadn’t worked on growth in any of my prior roles and now I probably spend 60%+ of my capacity catching up, learning basic tactics, and experimenting with new channels for Inari. I think we could be much farther along if I had mastered in-product growth and activation tactics, had reps setting up outbound and SEO systems, and built a community and audience much sooner (I also never realized how fun engaging with people online could be 😄). No excuses not being “technical” in 2024 💻 If you’re considering working on a SaaS startup and you can’t code, just go and learn to. With the recent advances in LLMs and coding assistants, there’s literally never been a better time to learn to code, unblock yourself when you run into issues, and build an MVP. There’s nobody on the planet that will care about your product as much as you will. If you’re unable to be deep in the details, identify defects, and make fixes quickly yourself, then the overall clock speed and quality bar of your product will suffer. The quality expectations for ALL startups have increased over the last few years and it’s on you as a founder to keep that rigor and velocity extremely high, so being able to unblock yourself makes a world of difference. Managing your own psychology 🧠 Surprisingly, the toughest part when transitioning to founding was managing my own mental state. There’s a constant internal uncertainty on whether you’re building something that people actually want and spending time on the right priorities. Your view on finances also completely changes. Money used to be a resource I spent on fun discretionary spend but now money feels like “oxygen”. The stakes of each day feels much heavier when you feel like you’re running out of oxygen for your startup which you're pouring your heart into. Overall, be prepared for these internal influences before making the jump! That could be better carving out the right runway, validating your idea or building an MVP before leaving your job, or bumping up your skills around building and selling beforehand.

I've failed hard at building a startup for over a year (but hopefully not for much longer). It's been a year since we founded Serra (YC S23), and in that time I've failed and learned—a lot. We've went through 3 pivots, talked to 100s of people, and I've learned a ton about myself in the process. If I could turn back the clock, 3 things that I would immediately do differently: 𝟏. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 (𝐀𝐒𝐀𝐏). • 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬—self-explanatory • 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬—much harder. Learn how to properly dig into a users’ pain points, don’t ask leading questions, and drop your conceptions before each call. • 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐲—talk is cheap, money is not. Worst case, you find out what you’re making isn’t wanted, which is honestly the best case. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐟𝐟 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭. If you're sweating thinking about doing it, then it’s probably the right thing to do. A personal example is as a recent college grad, I felt intimidated talking to more experienced people. I spent the first few months avoiding speaking openly with these people because I didn’t want to seem dumb. This was the worst thing I could do, as the only way to not be dumb is to learn, and the best way to learn is to openly ask. 𝟑. 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜. We viewed pivoting as running a series of experiments as fast as possible. Our hypothesis would be that “X is a big pain point for a certain ICP” or “Y is a solution a certain ICP would pay for.” Then, to collect data, we sought to talk to as many users as possible. We celebrated every yes, and most importantly every no, as each no helped us disprove our hypothesis faster. Learn to also recognize false signals (one-off customers you can’t find elsewhere) and set KPIs for each week. 𝟒. 𝐁𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. Recognize equally your strengths and weaknesses, celebrate your successes (no matter how small they might seem), lean on your cofounder(s), friends and family. I learned to break up tasks into smaller chunks. Instead of “we’re building a unicorn,” it became “focus on talking to 10 users.” Then it became “disqualify this idea within a week.” Then it became “close X deals this week.” Take small steps to the bigger goal & celebrate every time you hit that step. ======== If you’ve made it this far, thank you. I usually don't post much on LinkedIn, but between ChatGPT's flirty Her-inspired voice and Butker's commencement speech last week (same same but different), I'm a bit fired up. Meta recently announced the formation of a new AI Advisory Council. The kicker? This group, tasked with advising one of the world’s most powerful tech companies on its AI strategies, is composed entirely of white men aged 30 to 40. This decision comes just months after OpenAI faced criticism for its lack of diversity following Altman’s departure. (For a better example of how AI boards can be organized, check out the Government of Canada’s own Advisory Council: https://lnkd.in/gGbpi9wf) I hear you barking, big dog. "There are only four people; why does it matter!" "They're very smart and successful white men; I'm sure they know what they're talking about." "Why is it always about race / gender!" Or, [insert any comment from Tech Crunch's tweet on this story: https://lnkd.in/gAAf_eFn]. ICYMI: BIPOC and women are markedly underrepresented in tech, especially in leadership roles. And, diversity in decision-making—especially at this new frontier of very influential tech—is essential (underlined and in bold) for creating inclusive advancements that serve the whole, not the few. DEI isn’t just a "trend" or an option; it’s imperative for fair and equitable innovation. Technology (or anything, really) built by a homogenous group risks perpetuating biases and failing everyone else. What happens when a homogenous group makes a product? They make it primarily for people who think and behave the same way. Many, including the World Economic Forum, argue that AI is already failing women. From the inherent sexism of personal assistants and chatbots (which are predominantly female) to women being targeted by AI-generated explicit content, it's clear that AI has—and will continue to have—serious ramifications for women. BIPOC have also faced significant negative consequences, including bias in facial recognition (leading to wrongful arrests and privacy violations), discrimination in hiring algorithms, healthcare disparities, and more. By ensuring diverse voices are heard and included in the development process, we can build technology that is more effective, more inclusive, and more beneficial to society as a whole. But without them, AI will inevitably reinforce existing inequalities and fail to serve anyone who doesn't fit the homogenous mould. Anyway, a big shout out to my ladies (and BIPOC) in STEM. Your work is so important, and I hope you feel seen and appreciated every day.

🤝 Iterative Co-Founder Matching – Meet a Potential Co-Founder, Every Week. It's significantly harder to find a co-founder in Southeast Asia than in San Francisco. There's less people interested in being a founder and they're spread out across different countries, languages, etc. As someone who wants to see more people start a startup, this is an important problem to solve. As you probably don't know, my 2nd startup was about making relevant introductions. We thought maybe we could do a similar thing specifically for co-founders. Here's How it Works After you sign-up (See 📌 in comments) and fill out a questionnaire about yourself and the type of co-founder you're looking for, the following will happen each week. 1. Availability (Sunday) You will receive an e-mail asking if you are free this Thursday at 5 PM and want to meet a potential co-founder. If you don't reply, we'll assume you're not interested this week and try again the following week. 2. Match (Tuesday) If you opt-into the week, we will manually match you with someone we think would be a good fit for you as a co-founder based on both of your answers to the questionnaire. Once you're introduced to your match via e-mail, you're welcome to find a different time with them. > How much does this cost? Absolutely nothing. > If I find my co-founder through this, do I have to join Iterative? We would love to see you to apply to Iterative but you are absolutely under no obligation to do so. We just want to see more people start startups. > What if I want to stop participating? Just reply to any of the e-mails and say you're no longer interested. We'll take you off the list. > What if I don't want to meet the person you matched me with? We ask that you keep an open mind especially when looking for co-founders. If you absolutely don't want to meet them, you can privately e-mail us to let us know. This should be fun but more importantly, hopefully it's the origin for a few startups.
